The first hurdle you will face in rising above this is succumbing to the belief that you’re suffering from it. The moment you frame it as something that you’re suffering from, it becomes an external ‘attack’ that you believe you need to fend off. That puts you in defence mode, rather than claiming your agency in dealing with it.
There are no negative emotions. And these three emotional experiences are the most misunderstood, despite it being the most commonly experienced challenges that cause long-term emotional duress. They all three are legitimate human emotions. Understanding the context within which we experience these emotions is the secret to rising above it in a way that is sustainable.
Coping mechanisms, exercises, affirmations and other such tools that are offered by the mainstream mental health approach to these afflictions are unsustainable. When they fail you, the impact will be many times more intense than what you felt when you first experienced the depression setting in, the debilitating anxiety that hindered your progress, or the anger that destroyed more than it solved.
In this episode, I unpack these big three emotions in a way that resonates with the human experience so that you can appreciate why you feel that way while offering you a grounded perspective that will enable you to take practical steps towards rising above it in a meaningful and sustainable way.
