This week Paul has two great interviews for you: John Slot, Chief Innovation Officer of LYNX in Central Florida, and Rudy Vidal, Managing Director of Vidal Consulting Group. Both interviews center on building strong, emotional connections with riders, so they choose transit over other options.

John Slot leads a team responsible for testing and piloting innovations in and around the Orlando area. From sustainable buses to new payment options to bring fare equity to everyone, John's team makes sure residents, tourists, and soon APTA EXPO attendees can get around the city with ease. John talks about their energy transition from diesel to CNG to electrics over the next several years, plus how payment technology will make his system easier to navigate--and cheaper--for everyone.

In our leadership segment, Rudy Vidal gets to the heart of building loyal transit riders--stop selling transportation. Public transit is a commodified quasi-monopoly, so just doing the basics--buses that are on time--isn't enough to create loyalty. Loyalty comes from creating a positive emotional response in riders. Do people feel welcome and safe? Are they relaxed getting to work? Do they feel they are helping the environment? There are no easy answers to creating loyalty, but Rudy gives you questions to think about at your own agency.

Also in this episode, Mike Bismeyer reminds us of all the opportunities in transit and the hard work marketing and communications teams do to connect with people.
