Trap Talk From The Back Fence

In Episode 157 of Trap Talk, Zach Nannini and Richard Marshall Jr. welcome Lady 1 All-American Maddie Oswalt, a seven-time Ohio State Team member and the 2020 Ohio State Handicap Champion. Growing up on the line with her family, Maddie’s passion for trapshooting has carried her from SCTP programs to ATA competition—where she now stands among the top female shooters in the country.

Maddie talks candidly about competing in a male-dominated sport, the pride she takes in representing Lady 1 shooters, and the discipline it takes to reach All-American status. She breaks down her practice schedule, her approach to singles, doubles and handicap, and how she manages nerves under pressure.

Looking ahead to major events like the Southern Grand, she shares her goals, including cracking a hundred in doubles and continuing her push on the ATA circuit.

Key topics include:

Earning Lady 1 All-American honors
- SCTP to ATA transition
- Equipment evolution and setup
- Mental focus and confidence
- Coaching, mentorship, and community support
- Promoting women in the sport
- Practice routines before major shoots

Maddie’s story proves that hard work, family support, and the right mindset can take a young shooter a long way—while showing the next generation of women that they belong in this sport, too.

In Episode 156 of the Trap Talk Podcast, Zach Nannini and Richard Marshall Jr. sit down with Weston Anderson, the 2025 Autumn Grand HOA Champion and Junior 1st Team All American, to break down what it really takes to rise fast—and stay consistent—in competitive trapshooting.

Weston started shooting trap at just 10 years old and wasted no time separating himself from the pack. In this episode, he talks openly about the grind behind the wins: purposeful practice, strong coaching, traveling to tough shoots, and setting clear goals early. He explains why handicap and doubles suit his shooting style, how building his own custom stock changed his game, and why gun fit and balance matter more than chasing gear trends.

The conversation dives deep into ammo consistency, adapting to new shells, winter practice, and why experience on the line often teaches more than any classroom ever could. Weston also shares his thoughts on balancing education with shooting, mentoring younger shooters, and how the shooting sports community plays a critical role in long-term success.

If you’re a junior shooter, a parent, or someone chasing higher scores, this episode delivers real-world insight from someone doing it the right way—earned, not handed.

Topics include:
Winning the 2025 Autumn Grand HOA
Junior All-American mindset and preparation
Practice habits that actually move scores
Custom gun fit and stock building
Ammo selection and consistency
Coaching, mentoring, and community
Education, career paths, and goal setting

Straight talk from a young champion who’s building his future one target at a time.

Trap Talk Episode 155, Zach Nannini and Richard Marshall Jr. sit down with Robert Hight — NHRA superstar, Funny Car champion, and now a passionate trap shooter — for a deep dive into the craft of shooting and what he’s learned after stepping away from the drag strip.

Robert opens up about the pressure of racing at 330+ mph and how that intensity compares to the focus required in trap shooting. From there, the conversation settles into what our sport is built on: consistency, craftsmanship, and community.

He breaks down the science behind barrel work, how he came to acquire Wilkinson Barrel Works, why quality shotgun shells matter more than most shooters realize, and what really goes into choke selection when you're chasing performance at different elevations.

Robert also shares why he fell in love with trap shooting, how the shooting community has welcomed him, and what he hopes to build next.

Thank you to Robert for taking the time and check out ShotgunWorksInc.com

We’re back with Part 2 of our ATA “King for a Day” series — and this time, we brought in someone who sits at the table where the real decisions get made.

Episode 154 features Jason Barnett, the ATA Central Zone Vice President and a member of the ATA Executive Committee. Jason joins Ricky, Zach, and Jon to walk through the ideas shooters submitted in Part 1 and give real-world insight into how the ATA operates, what’s already being worked on, and what changes are actually possible.

This episode digs deeper, clears up misconceptions, and puts some truth behind the curtain.

What we cover:

Shooter ideas from Part 1 — broken down and discussed

Jason’s perspective from inside the Executive Committee
How ATA policy and decisions really get shaped
What’s realistic, what isn’t, and why
Where the ATA is focusing its long-term efforts

If you care about the future of trapshooting, this conversation is worth your time.

We asked the question on Facebook:
“What ideas would you bring to the ATA if you were in charge?”

The response?
Over 220 comments from shooters all across the world!

In Part 1 of this multi-episode series, Zach, Ricky, Jon, and guest Joey Charnigo dive into the first set of major themes that came straight from the shooters themselves. This is a positive, forward-looking conversation built on what the community actually wants to see in the future of the ATA.

We cover topics like:

• Making major shoots more exciting and rewarding
• Improving transparency, competition structure, and fairness
• Strengthening youth programs and long-term membership
• Helping new shooters feel welcome and confident
• The future of tech, scoring, and the ATA’s digital presence
• How clubs like Nevada and Stockdale are leading by example
• Why shooters are asking for more fun, more community, and more value

This episode is not about complaining — it’s about opportunity.
The ATA has a rich history, a strong community, and a bright future if we listen to the shooters who care deeply about the sport.

Part 2 is coming next week! Where we go even deeper into the remaining big themes with Jason Barnett from the ATA Executive Committee!

If you're passionate about trapshooting and where the sport is headed, this conversation is the start of something big.

In this special edition of Trap Talk, we bring you two great conversations that show both the history and heart behind the Grand American.

First up, Phil Murray and Steve Ellinger from Clay Target Legends share how they’re preserving the stories of shotgun sports icons — the legends who built the foundation we all shoot on today.

Then, Red Bud Mayor Susan L. Harbaugh joins us to talk about what the Grand American means to her town, Sparta, and the entire Southern Illinois community. From local business impact to civic pride, this conversation reminds us why this tradition matters.

Watch, listen, and share if you believe in keeping the history of trapshooting alive for the next generation.
