TRASHFUTURE

We're off this week, but we've unlocked our Netflix Part 2 episode for you to enjoy. We brought on Jathan Sadowski (@jathansadowski) and Ed Ongweso Jr (@bigblackjacobin) from This Machine Kills Podcast to discuss the famously sane and healthy workplace culture of Netflix with Riley, Milo, and Alice. Guess what? It's bad. And it's probably coming to your workplace sooner rather than later.

If you want to listen to Part 1, you can find it here: https://trashfuturepodcast.podbean.com/e/nut-flix-part-1-feat-this-machine-kills/

If you want to listen to Part 3, in which we review Netflix's own SPENCER CONFIDENTIAL, you can access it on the Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/44591496

Trashfuture are: Riley (@raaleh), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), Hussein (@HKesvani), Nate (@inthesedeserts), and Alice (@AliceAvizandum)

On this festive Britainology we are joined by Alice to discuss the 1982 Falklands War. Why has it permanently lodged in the psyche of the Boomers? Why do people care about these rocks in the middle of the South Atlantic? Why did a British task force commander decide to explode himself in order to dislodge a machine gun position? You will be able to learn all of this and more by listening.

It sure is great we solved music piracy! How did we solve it? Well, by enriching two Swedish men and ensuring that only a handful of artists see any revenue from their music when it’s streamed. We are, of course, discussing Spotify -- and we’ve brought on Dan Boeckner (@DanBoeckner) of the bands Wolf Parade (@WolfParade) and Operators (@Operators_Band) to discuss it.

As mentioned on the show, Operators has a Patreon where you can get access to new music and a fan community -- sign up here: https://www.patreon.com/operators

We did a deep dive into the ways in which being a Tory donor means you'll get massive, no-bid contracts for government services -- even if you massively fail at providing them over and over again! To help us understand, we brought on investigative journalist and friend of the show Henry Dyer (@Direthoughts) to discuss.

We are joined by George Pearkes, macro strategist at Bespoke Invest and all around financial funnyman, to peek under the hood of the world's largest owner of assets: BlackRock. What do you do when you own nearly everything? As we will see in the episode, you try to own more things until you can really do away with that "nearly." Also, we talk about Uber's decision to drop its self driving car division and the thrilling conclusion (?) to Laguna Beach's billionaire battlefront, as bond king Bill Gross's war with his neighbour enters its denouement.

Also, special thanks to Neoliberal Dad on twitter for cooking up some of the core ideas explored herein.

We've decided to revisit two of our favorite subjects from the past year: OYO, the hotel app that destroys hotels; and Lex Greensill's one weird trick to collapse the global economy. You will enjoy hearing Riley, Milo, and Alice's takes on this.

David Adler and James Schneider of Progressive International go deep into Amazon What *actually* is Amazon? How does it work? What on earth is Amazon Explore? And will we bow down before Monitron and Amazon Panorama? Also, we read an article about Boris Johnson that includes the phrase "hail the dawn!"

We talked so much about the Netflix-produced Mark Wahlberg Boston Cop film SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL. What a great punchline! What an absurd concept to declare that 85 million people had watched it. Anyway, we realised that we had to actually view the film in order to complete the cycle, so we brought on Olga Koch to review it with Riley, Milo, and Alice. Hope you enjoy!

This week we want to talk Davos, we want to talk startups with unique raw materials, we want to talk about what all the right-wing conspiracy theories about billionaire overlords get right and get wrong -- and to do that we brought on economist and writer Grace Blakeley (@graceblakeley), host of the A World to Win Podcast (@aworldtowinpod), and let’s just say it got weird. This episode features Riley, Milo, Hussein, and Alice -- hope you enjoy!
