  • Yogananda: Saint for Modern Times

    1/27/83
Yogananda was a saint for modern times in every sense of the term. Performing miracles and eminating divine love were as much a part of his life as of any saint. He brought the teachings right into your daily life.

Each one of us is a small manifestation of a greater consciousness. Being more in tune with and eventually merging with that greater consciousness is the goal of life.

Science is finding that this world is not matter, it is energy and perhaps this energy contains consciousness. Yogis have said for centuries that matter is energy and energy is consciousness. The teachings of science and of yoga are beginning to come together.

It was good timing for the science of yoga to be sent to the West. Yoga  is the science of religion that teaches people how to test the spiritual truths and find out for themselves whether they are really true or not.

Yogananda and other masters were drawn to come to the West when they felt that people were ready for something more.

Yogananda always maintained his inner joy and had balance in his life. He kept his elevated consciousness and was able to teach from a state of high consciousness without diluting the teachings. He adapted the teachings and explained them in terms of people’s needs.

Yogananda showed us in this 20th Century and in an increasingly more materialistic world how we can realize God – a tremendous teaching!

The material changes you go through don’t matter all that much; but the spiritual changes can be seen in retrospect as the biggest changes in your life.

Yogananda’s real message was to give us hope that we too can experience oneness with God. And we can expand our consciousness and become one with Him.

The power of the divine is not going to come to us automatically. You need to open the door and wake up to the reality that you ARE one with God.

Yogananda wrote in his poem Samadhi, “From joy I came, for joy I live, in sacred joy, I melt again.

  • The Importance of Attunement

    1/5/1986

The Importance of Attunement – when you think the guru is near, he is near – at all times!

Kriyananda paraphrases Lahiri Mahasaya statement about Yogananda, “For all those who tune in to him, he will be a mighty locomotive bringing souls to God’s kingdom.”

Kriyananda describes what real attunement is, and the most effective ways we can tune into Yogananda’s powerful, divine ray.

The difference between the word for disciple vs. student in the languages in India is interesting. A disciple is willing to take the discipline of a teacher and a student is just there to learn.

‘Where there are two or three people gathered in my name or two or three thoughts, God is with you.’

  • Experience: The Basis of True Understanding

    8/21/90

Experience: The Basis of True Understanding – the world is on the eve of a radical change in religion.

People want proof based on experience of the teachings.

We can never know truth with the mind – we must experience it in our lives and in our hearts.

This talk is a classic and describes what the future of religion can be, based on direct experience of God vs. dogmas.

Kriyananda gave this talk at Spiritual Renewal Week 1990.

  • Expansiveness

    11/1/04

Expansiveness is a foremost quality of Yogananda. For example, he talked about UFO’s, interstellar travel, and life on other planets.

He said that subtle forces of nature will be revealed in future times when people’s awareness will be refined enough to understand.

Kriyananda said Yogananda could enjoy everything, because he had the ability to become all things.

The more you can expand your consciousness, the more you can grow spiritually.

  • A Message of Unity - Tribute to Paramhansa Yogananda

    1/25/97

“Yogananda came to bring the world the understanding of the unity of mankind, not the unity from an outward standpoint, but the unity from within.” — Swami Kriyananda

Each person has the infinite light within, and lives by that power. We need to recognize that all things come from this power. God is the Doer.

When Yogananda talked with someone, he spoke to their soul and their particular needs. He reflected back to you what your higher self would be thinking.

Yogananda taught that the best way of working with people is to work with them, not against them, to see them as your friend and to think of what’s good for them.

The more we can learn to see life as a flow of unity, the more we will be able to find that which we are all looking for; happiness, love and inner peace.

  • Religion of the Future

    7/21/1985

Religion of the Future – religion will evolve from dogma and conflict toward deeper spirituality, peace and harmony among all people.

There are two Treasures talks, both titled Religion of the Future. One talk was given January 22, 1982 and the other on July 21, 1985. The two talks are very different but one common theme is that religion will evolve away from dogma and conflict toward deeper spirituality, peace and harmony among all people.

In the future more people will want to learn to meditate and experience the grace of God. People will also discover that by living in the right ways, such as expressing gratitude, generosity, kindness and love, we will bring more harmony and peace into the world.

Swami ends this 7/21/85 talk by saying that the upheavals in this world will continue until man wakes up and realizes that the religion for the future needs to be all embracing, “a religion above all, of love and of joy.”

  • Concentrate Your Forces

    Circa 1978

Learning how to concentrate your forces allows you to put all of your energy in one direction.

Here are on the battlefield of life knowing that we want to resolve the battle by achieving peace.  There are two ways of achieving this peace. One is to put out enough energy to win a victory and the other is to give up. If you give up, you are surrendering and running away.

Each time you overcome an enemy, you cut through all the shreds of delusion, which seem to be strong, but are really shadows.  They have no power except as we have given them power.

The time will come when we can cut through all of our delusions at once and be free in the infinite. It’s a wonderful future to look forward to. Concentration of all your forces is basic to the whole spiritual path.
