Death has a way of haunting every plan we make, and we’re remarkably creative at pretending we can keep it at arm’s length. We start with a strange American story that makes the point in concrete and lumber: Sarah Winchester spends decades building a sprawling mansion because she believes nonstop construction will keep a curse and death away.
