Dr. Mayer departs from guest interviews in this show to discuss examples of some the conditions in the mental health field that contribute to the explosion of violence we see in our troubled teenagers. He begins with the case of Anthony (alias) an explosive 14 year-old escalating in his aggression toward others. Mayer details how the boy’s parents seek help and they confront a mental health system that is self-serving rather than patient serving. In a 10 min consult the boy is prescribed adult medications and medications not even appropriate to his physical proportions. Mayer goes on to point a finger at the TV “doctors” who delude the public by giving models of mental health care that are inappropriate and not reflective of what is available to really help teens. Finally, Mayer comments on recent headlines of celebrities out of control, needing help and he calls for all of us to speak out to help others in need.
