Dr. Mayer angrily speaks out against the notion that drugs killed the actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman. You and I and anyone close to Mr. Hoffman who knew about his addiction and didn’t make the necessary personal sacrifices to stop him from killing himself by the use of heroin are the culprits here, not the drug. Drugs are tools but we are the craftsmen of our fate when we suffer from addiction. We must stop using language such as ‘drug abuse.’ We don’t abuse drugs, we abuse ourselves. Dr. Mayer also admonishes those who we will see stand up at memorials for Mr. Hoffman and self-indulgently state: “He was my friend.” Well, friend what did you do to stop him from killing himself with drugs? Did you have the 9-5 shift of keeping heroin away from him? Dr. Mayer warns you not to fall for those who claim to be his ‘friends’ who will state: “I just didn’t know he was using.” When you hear this you are listening to a liar. It is not just the addicted who must say NO TO DRUGS we all must unite and say No To Drugs for once and for all.

Dr. Mayer comments on the latest antics of Justin Bieber and guides parents on how to use this out-of-control teenager as a way to advance their own parenting agenda on their teens and children. For this reason, Dr. Mayer calls Justin Bieber a ‘friend’ of the show and you should consider him a friend as well because his immature actions invite, no beg conversation in the whole family. Dr. Mayer advises: follow the attorney. The attorney that Bieber hired to advise him can either help turn Justin around or he will join the circus that surrounds the troubled boy.

Dr. John Mayer tackles two issues in the news concerning teens. In the first he discusses the issue of school screenings for mental health. A shocking fact is that few schools around the country do even cursory screenings of students. Costs are often cited as why. Dr. Mayer shows how effective screening shouldn’t be cost prohibitive for your school and what you as a parent can do to make sure your school is screening teens for mental health issues. In the second half of this broadcast Dr. Mayer addresses the issue of ADHD and the selling of this diagnosis in the U.S. He quotes from an article in the New York Times by Alan Schwarz. The broadcast alerts us to many facts about this diagnosis and the use of medications to be mindful of.

In this lively, sharing and yet highly instructive broadcast Dr. Mayer calls for us to change our approach to the Holidays. They don’t have to be the HollerDays like they have deteriorated to become in most families. Don’t force you and your family into negative situations and events. Broadcast take-aways are: No Yelling/Communicate/Control your Family and practice your new healthy lifestyle just like DR.
