Dr. John Mayer discusses the Cleveland Kidnapping Case and explains how the three victims are yet another example of what he has coined as Urban Feral Children. He brings up his recent expert consult of a prisoner who was a ward of the state’s child welfare system and essentially raised by human animals in an urban jungle since she was five years old. Both this prisoner and the Castro victims were abused physically and sexually by a persons living outside the rules of society in state Dr. Mayer reminds us is termed social Anomie. Although investigations found the historical cases of feral children to be a hoax these cases of Urban Feral Children are real.

Juan’s story details the healthcare system’s appalling lack of: understanding of teenagers, empathy, rapport, and lack of any tools to help them in their time of need. He and the other teens locked up in this psychiatric ward receive nightly ‘motivational talks’ which are nothing more than attempts at brainwashing done with no emotion by disengaged staff. Juan’s story reminds us of the movie: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and how little things have changed.
