Faith In Action. Part 7.

This will be the final episode on the murder of Father Reynaldo Rivera. There were several twists and turns over the first years of the investigation and the police were overwhelmed by all the information and the leads that took them from New Mexico to New York, Arizona, and Montana. Some leads made no sense and others seemed fairly solid, and while no arrests were made, you can see that it wasn’t because the police were letting the case slide. Every lead had to be followed and they were.

The entire city of Santa Fe was frenzied. Citizens of Santa Fe no longer felt safe. The peaceful, beautiful city surrounded by mountains, now seemed ominous. Even dangerous. No one went out at night anymore, and no one talked with strangers. Clergy from all over the state were on their guard. Many of them wouldn’t go out to minister unless they were sure where they were going and who they were talking to. Gone were the days of priests dropping everything to perform their ministry to strangers.

Editorials in the papers and news reports reflected the urgency that the people of Santa Fe felt around the death of Father Reynaldo. People demanded justice. The Archdiocese was also putting pressure on law enforcement to solve this crime. Police were investigating every lead, even those that seemed false or outlandish, and they felt like they were chasing their tails.

On August 5, 1982, Father Reynaldo left St. Francis Cathedral to meet a man who called himself Michael Carmello at the rest stop on La Bajada Hill. He was reported missing the following morning when he failed to return to the Cathedral.- An aerial search of the area was conducted on August 7, but Officer Eric Lucero and pilot Gary Aycock had flown toward Cochiti, along the highway. They were looking for Father Rivera’s car, not his body. They went towards Waldo where Father Geier told them that Michael Carmello’s grandfather had a ranch. Father Rivera’s body was located on the other side of the highway, north of where the aerial search was conducted.

During the 80s, six priests, including Father Rivera were murdered across the Southwestern US and Montana. For many years, it was suspected that their deaths could have all been linked in some way.I want to talk about the possibilities and the myths surrounding the connections between Father Reynaldo and these five other priests. There are distinct differences, not only in miles but in who these men were, who they claimed to be, and the connections that seem to get thinner and thinner as one digs deeper and deeper into Father Reynaldo’s murder investigation. These men were all greatly valued in their communities as ministers of the faith. Their parishioners feel their loss to this day. Please keep this in mind, as I tell these stories.

Today's promo: Twisted and Uncorked.

During the investigation into Father Reynaldo’s murder, several letters were sent to various government agencies, the Archdiocese, and a few Catholic churches that claimed that Father Reynaldo was murdered because he had something to do with the civil wars in Latin America. Several civil wars had broken out in Central and South America during the 60s. These wars lasted well into the 90s, and Catholic priests who were ministering to various Indigenous peoples in those areas were put in the middle of those civil wars. These wars were very much about the rich against the poor. While the rich had backing from the US government, the poor had missionary priests who were only armed in faith, many of which would become martyrs for staying with the people. Even if they couldn’t protect those people, they ministered to them. I’ve done some very intensive research into Father Reynaldo and his career, nothing that I’ve seen or read has connected him to the civil wars in any way, but there are those out there who believe in the conspiracy theories that were created by these letters. After attending seminary in Ohio, Father Reynaldo’s career was spent entirely in New Mexico. He was not a missionary priest. While there is a very low probability that he had anything to do with the unrest in Central America, every lead had to be followed.

Father Reynaldo and his brothers in the church were at Mass where the service was just ending when a call came into the rectory. Father Gerard Geier answered the call. It was around 8:00 in the evening. The caller was a man who Geier estimated to be in his 30s. He told Father Geier that he needed a priest. His voice was calm and deliberate, and . . . . convincing. Neither Father Geier nor Father Reynaldo had any reason to think that these calls were nefarious in any way. This is part 2 of the Father Rivera Story. The subsequent parts will be longer than the initial two.

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no one could say how it got there. When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who lived a sinister double life. Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley, digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren? Hi Friend,

Today we start a new mini-series focused on the unsolved murder of Father Reynald Rivera.
Father Reynaldo John Rivera answered the phone at St. Francis Cathedral church one night to hear a man on the other end asking him to meet him at a rest stop so he could perform Last Rites on the man’s grandfather who had had a heart attack. Father Rivera went to perform the sacrament and was found in the desert shot to death two days later. This murder has remained unsolved for 40 years.
