  • Trail Of The Red Ax
    The Villisca Ax Murders Mystery

Jump to the AD-FREE Safe House Edition

Episode 69 starts with a brutal ax murder that scandalized the quiet town of Villisca, Iowa, about 2,000 souls in the summer of 1912, when a family of six and two young visitors were killed in their beds by an assailant wielding a long-handled ax, the family’s own tool, which was left at the scene. Clues were scant, and it took years for the twists and subplots to emerge, including a string of similar murders, implications that it was a job for hire by a business rival, and a bizarre confession by an itinerant minister five years later.

In episode 47, we follow the unusual narrative of the Northcott family. They came from Canada--and who knows what atrocities they committed there--but when they came to California to practice their evil habits, they were caught, though not soon enough. As many as eight young men may have been tortured and murdered on their Wineville farm, but none of them seemed to be able to tell the truth, even when their lives depended on it. One would go to prison, and one would pay the ultimate price for their crimes, but that hardly seems enough. This is the crime that inspired the 2008 Clint Eastwood film “The Changeling”

    Roadhouse Of No Return

Jump To The AD-FREE Safe House Edition

Episode 40 takes a look at the legend of a Kansas family that killed at least 11 visitors to their roadhouse in the early 1870s. They aroused suspicion by choosing as a victim a well-known physician, whose family soon pulled out all stops in a search until they uncovered his body, along with 10 missing travelers, on the Bender property. The Bender Family was nowhere to be found, and never were. Sightings and even arrests were regular for many years, even into the next century, but the second act of this episode purports to tell the true story of what happened to the mass murdering hostelers.

Episode 19. Following the brutal murder of his common law wife Tillie Ziegler in Buffalo, New York, March, 1889, the rough character William Kemmler said he was glad he did it was was happy to hang for the crime. He did not quite get his wish, as a newly passed law in the state of New York allowed Kemmler to become the first man to die in the electric chair. His executioners knew that the execution would be an experiment of sorts, and it was not exactly the rousing success they had hoped for, but it did usher in a new era in America’s criminal justice system.

Episode 39 is a follow-up to Episode 19, "The Shocking Death of William Kemmler," which I had published about two months prior. If you remember, that execution went so badly that many thought it was a failed experiment. Indeed, it took the state of New York nearly a year to perform a second electric chair execution, but it did so with a bang, putting four men to death on the same day, July 7, 1891. - Will it work out any better? Episode 37 is the story of an 1883 murder that appeared in newspapers across the country in 1905 as "The Bothamley Murder Mystery" under the byline of Captain Patrick D. Tyrrell, who at that time had retired from a career as a detective in the United States Secret Service. His job was mainly to hunt down counterfeiters, but he achieved some fame when he foiled a plot to steal the body of Abraham Lincoln, a case I hope to take up in a future episode. He wrote this and other stories in a syndicated newspaper feature titled “Stories of the Secret Service”.
