DESCRIPTION:
John George Haigh was a fraudster and conman who believed he had discovered the formula for the perfect murder. Between 1944 and 1949, he targeted wealthy victims, bludgeoned or shot them, and dissolved their bodies in sulphuric acid, pouring the remains down a drain. He forged signatures, stole fortunes, and lived a luxury lifestyle on the proceeds. When questioned about his final victim, Olive Durand-Deacon, he told police: "I have destroyed her in acid. Every trace has gone. How can you prove murder if there is no body?" But Haigh was wrong. The acid could not dissolve dentures, gallstones, or body fat. Forensic pathologist Keith Simpson found the evidence in the sludge, and Haigh was hanged in August 1949. His "perfect murder" was undone by a single set of false teeth.
