In his first day as PM, Rishi Sunak assembled a Cabinet. He has included members regardless of political differences. This differs from the decisions of Boris Johnson, and even more so of Liz Truss who preferred the approach of choosing loyalists.

The most controversial appointment is Suella Braverman, purveyor of right wing muscular views on immigration. Braverman is popular with party members. She had resigned or been sacked for cavalier disregard for security precautions. Her re-appointment as Home Secretary is already seen as an unwise move, presumed to be a political necessity.

The story is picked by Hugo Mifflin head of Personnel at Meniscus Laboratories. 

We learn of a long-running feud at Meniscus involving John Keane, and a fellow scientist, Julian Callender, which may have influenced John Keane in his departure for Urmston University.

His health had deteriorated and is experiencing a period of recovery for hospitalisation. The head of the Laboratory, Dr Trescothick has been informed, and intends to visit him when he has sufficiently. recovered.

John Keane has left Urmson on a secondment to Urmston University organised by his academic manager, Montague Beamer. He has met the University Vice-Chancellor Wendy Lockinge who seems interested in his earlier meeting with the mysterious old man.
At breakfast one day, he meets the celebrity academic Tony Scrivener, the glamorous student Hudson Baye, and briefly, the student activist Dando Llewelyn

On the day a new Prime Minister was appointed, after the brief reign of the last one, strains of a song filtered through an open bathroom window.  It may have been a gleeful party activist but whether for the Conservative Party or the opposition is not clear...

John Keane encounters a mysterious old man who tells him about an ancient  secret society which passes on their secrets  by means of books each written by an author who is a member of the society. He is directed to study the masterwork by the Economist Maynard Keynes, and told he will be contacted later by the old man.

He is later invited to a meeting at Urmston University, by Montague Beamer, a senior academic.  Through Beamer, he meets the celebrated vice-chancellor Wendy Lockinge who appears to know something about the old man, but without mentioning the secret society.

She encourages him to leave his work at the Meniscus Laboratories to spend some time at the University to pursue his ideas about the secrets that Keynes had concealed in his writings. 

Keane is suspicious when he discover's Beamer has exaggerated his location, which in reality is a cramped set of rooms with working conditions like a beehive.  

He hesitates, but is told by Dr Brush, one of the occupants of the beehive, that he will probably get sucked into the plans for him being arranged by Wendy Lockinge and her accomplice Montague Beamer.

This has been the craziest week in U.K. politics since we cut off the head of King Charles 1st. Highlights included the sacking of top cabinet leaders, a lettuce becoming a joke measure of political survival time, the resignation of our Prime Minister, and Larry the Downing Street Cat seeing off a  marauding fox.

Of, yes and now a speed-dating version of Eenie, Meenie, Mindy, Moe, by the Conservative party to select a new Prime Minister in the time it takes for an iceberg lettuce to wilt.

Crazy enough? Enough, you cry. But there is more. As I write, I see today’s headlines. They include the name of Boris Johnson among the front runners for becoming our next PM.  Boris, the recently departed and discredited former PM but one. 

Fortunately, I have found an explanation hidden away in the wonderful children’s book Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

This is only the third PMQs since Liz Truss began her ill-fated Premiership. Since then, her original plan has been hung drawn and quartered, by market reaction, and this week by her replacement Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt. One pressure point is the so-called triple-lock on pensions.  My summary notes are abbreviated, but capture the general tenor of a noisy session.

But the PMs travails were only beginning. In the space of an hour, a cancelled meeting and the resignation of senior cabinet minister produced Woeful Wednesday to follow last week's Frantic Friday ...

Friday 14 October.

Overnight, The Chancellor Kwasi Kwartang (KK)  has cut short his American trip, and is returning for discussions with Liz Truss. 

Midday.

News leaks out that KK is to resign as Chancellor, or be sacked.  BBC news is on full political crisis alert. The BBC1 Politics Live show has its customary spectrum of opinion pundits.  KK has left his post, sacked or resigned. The pundits describe it a profound political crisis.

The events of the day quickly labelled Frantic Friday are beginning to unfold...
