Our mission here at the "CC & JT Amateur Hour" is to "help writers write," and part of our madness is to publicly examine our creative motivations. In this episode, we dive into why we write and don't write about graphic sex.

This is not then general, ten-thousand-foot view that we've done in previous episodes. We talk about our motivations, challenges, and prejudices about our characters having sex in our books. We go deep and, as always, CC and I learn something new about each other, even after 40+ years of intimate monogamy.

We ask our fellows writers to chime in on the subject: how far do your character go, and why or why not do you go there? Add your comments below.

Happy holidays to all who engage in joy and frivolity at this time of year which, considering the number of celebrations there are, means everyone.

We're back from West Sacramento after Thanksgiving with the relations, something we're always happy to do. Added bonus: the trip gave us the topic of this week's podcast: getting outside of our comfort zones.

Writers are very much creatures of habits, so sometimes our complacency needs a kick in the pants. For us, that meant two nights in the Embassy Suites where they wait on you hand and foot. We're so used to taking care of ourselves at hotels, so to have someone park our car and carry our luggage was surreal.

But busting out of comfort zones gives writers material for their books and maybe, just maybe, fresh energy for their manuscript. Check out our discussion.

On the Nevada Author Network, Nikolai Wisekal discusses the critical decision authors face between writing for creativity and pursuing publishing. He notes publishing is basically a professional promise between a business and a reader, bringing with it their expectations and demands. Creativity, on the other hand, is literary art for the author, allowing the writer to have total freedom over cover art, the manuscript, and associated work products such as blurbs.

Nikolai also spends time on the business of releasing chapters via a membership service such as Patreon and the now defunct Amazon Vella. He outlines why releasing chapters one at a time to subscribers can be a challenge, especially to readers who are used to having the entire book in their hands.

The podcast closes with an in-depth discussion on how writers can be successful at book signings. Nikolai wrote the attached guide from his own experiences (PDF).

Before we dive into the meat of the podcast, we completely forgot to mention that Zoey and Finding Salvation Part One placed as finalists in their respective categories in the 2025 Independent Author Network Book of the Year Awards. To say this recognition is an honor is an understatement. We send our sincerest thanks to our creation team of our fabulous Beta readers, Teri Case and Red Adept Editing. Thank you to everyone who was involved.

While we were doing a book signing at Comma Coffee this week, I found that A Sheriff in Nevada received a 1-star written review from a local reader. I like 1-star reviews because it tells potential readers that someone who doesn't know the writer read the book. This particular review gave CC and me a chance to talk about reviews in general. Spoiler: yeah, I pushed back a little.

In this episode of our award-winning podcast where we "help writers write," we talk at length about the power of writing a series.

Frankly, I never intended to write a series and, in fact, was adamant against them because I felt them to be constricting. I like the "freewheeling" feeling of creating new universes, but then there's a price for creating interesting characters. Readers always want to know what happens to them. Even when I finished the complete "Serving Salvation" trilogy, I got requests for Book Four (face palm).

We discuss the pros and cons of doing a series, including the financial cost.

Related to that was our talk about the success of our 99¢ sales. We have set the price of Book One of our seven series at that low prices, and the readers responded. At this time, we've only made the change to the Amazon e-books, but we're going to expand that to the other major platforms (Apple, B&N, Google, and Kobo). We'll report back on the results.

We chatted about our appearance at the Reno Barnes and Noble, which did not turn out as we had hoped. We did get to watch and talk to people, and CC got all purtified and everything as you can see from the above picture.

We'll be at Comma Coffee in downtown Carson City on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, beginning at 9:00am. A portion of our book sales will to the Nevada Department of Veteran Services Suicide Prevention Program.

As always, we want to thank Teri Case and Red Adept for their fantastic service to our cause, and we also appreciate our fan club and roadies, Capa and Dan.

Don't forget to check out our online bookstore with a little bit of swag.

Thank you for following along and please reach out if you have questions or suggestions.

In this episode of our award-winning podcast, we are yet again recovering from an outdoor writing event. We set up a booth at the Nevada Day Parade, and we met with diverse personalities and passionate writers, and we managed to sell books. We talk about things we’ve learned from outdoor writing events, including be prepared for all kinds of weather. Our mantra is: "We sold more books here than if we stayed home and sold zero."

We talked about one of the best World Series that wasn’t the Cubs 2016 series, and our hats are off to both teams who played their hearts out. Darn shame one team had to lose.

This week we joined friends and colleagues as we bid farewell to Guy Rocha, a personality who needs no introduction if you’re a true Nevadan.

If you want to meet us, we will be at the Reno Barnes and Noble on Saturday, November 8. Come on down and buy a lot of books.

Finally, our devious plan to point attention at our books is working. People are snatching up the first in the below series now that they’re priced at 99¢ on Amazon:

A Sheriff in Nevada
Finding Salvation Part One
Hope Knocks Twice (The Emma Parks CPS Novels)
Love & Death on I-80 West (The Tucci Chronicles)
Serving Salvation Book One

She makes the significant point that many people take on responsibilities that aren't theirs due to a desire to please others.

For the Nevada Author Network, CC and JT interview the dynamic writing duo, Sharon and Stephen Provost, who share their journey as authors in Northern Nevada. A great team, Stephen has been stringing words together as a journalist for decades, and Sharon started writing due to Stephen's encouragement. Not only are they successful independent writers, Sharon and Stephen frequently collaborate on compilations featuring notable authors from Nevada.

They discuss their transition from journalism to full-time writing, the challenges and successes of participating in book events, and the importance of preserving historical narratives through their works. The conversation also delves into the intricacies of writing both fiction and nonfiction, the collaborative process of creating anthologies, and their aspirations for future projects.
