Typical Books of Terror: Horror Books and Fiction Discussion

Here is a quick list of new horror book releases for March 2021 from Horror Writers Association authors. The first day of string here and it is still chilly - but not as cold-blooded as some of the horror books we read!

Mentioned here are:

Grim Fairy Tales: Folk Tales from the Crypt by Joseph VanBuren from Sykophunk Productions (I said Jason in error)

I missed the new Tim Waggoner book! I'll mention it in my wrap-up video!

As mentioned, if you know of any French-language and preferably horror booktube channels please let me know as I would love to subscribe.  Have an ooky spooky spring!

To categorize horror, we often look to film or our favourite genres. Here is a quick workshop deriving into the types of horror and how they rank in scares against one another. There may be aspects of books you read or write that are not horror but have these elements!

This is based on a presentation for a local writer's circle on horror sub-genres. Being a writer or a reader of fiction we see the focus of a work does not always link to how 'scary' it is. Taking some popular methods of defining horror, I express them as degrees of horror and show how most horror sub-genres are linked to a measure of how terrifying they can be.

Explore some other methods of defining horror in media from the very broad to the narrow and find some ideas on where to market, learn, network, or perhaps find your next book to read.

The PDF version of the slides can be found here: http://nightface.ca/Peever-Writing-Horror.pdf

February was a little slower in reading but I also wiggled in two books for reviews, not listed. A few new books have come my way so am curious if anyone here has read them - especially the Gil Valle book!

A little further into Daughters of Darkness and loving it!

The Green River Killer was a nearly mythological case for decades. Even after apprehension, plea deals, and the identification of missing and murdered women, it remains one of the most chilling cases born of systemic hatred and violence.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Gary Leon Ridgway is believed to have murdered at least 71 teenage girls and women near Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. In court statements, Ridgway later reported that he had killed so many that he lost count. A majority of the murders occurred between 1982 and 1984. (Wikipedia)

The son of a task force investigator, Jeff Jensen, brings us to the table while his father, Tom Jensen investigates the crimes and interrogates the killer. A black and white hardcover tale that is a great addition to my shelves.

Haunting houses are maybe more insidious than haunted ones. They stay with you, they shore up in your memory and lay tacky wallpaper on your flesh. They hang their hat upon your head. In horror fiction, the descriptions of these houses fuel film depictions and the stuff of our nightmares. Or wildest dreams, depending on your version of the ideal home...

A special and heartfelt thank you to all who sent best wishes after our eldest dog passed away.
