To start the year off right, I read two true-crime books, a true-crime graphic novel, and a few short novels too!
There has been a delay in my reading this week and quite possibly the next, but I read enough in January to make up the slack so will record in February with The Green River Killer, something on Isreal Keyes, and new horror releases update as ever. Have an ooky, spooky day!

A five-star true-crime read. Pick up a copy: https://amzn.to/392UM1h This is the only book-length work by Michelle McNamara that was published posthumously. There is a related podcast and a docuseries on HBO.
Known as the Visalia Ransacker, East Area Rapist, or Original Night Stalker; the Golden State Killer is a serial killer, serial rapist, burglar, and former police officer guilty of 13 murders, 50 rapes, and 120 known burglaries in three one-man crime sprees across California between 1973 and 1986. Part of his behaviour includes obscene phone calls, hang-up calls before and after the crime, stalking, and possibly written threats or taunts. Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., 72 years old, was arrested for these crimes in April 2018 and given more than 12 life sentences.
I first heard of the Golden State killer after listening to an episode of the Generation Why podcast: https://podbay.fm/p/the-generation-why-podcast/e/1447693531

Preceded by Mapping the Interior and followed up by My Heart is a Chainsaw. There could be short works in between these as he is sometimes found between the pages of Datlow anthologies and literary quarterlies. The first thing I read by him stopped me in my tracks: 'Father, Son, Holy Rabbit' found in The New Black : https://amzn.to/2N2KWUA

4.5/5 - While not entirely a cover to cover love affair for me, it was a page-turner in that I was invested in the characters. All of them. From the mysterious to the dead. There were moments I felt I was reading a point-form note of what the author intended to write for the next page. I enjoy the curt and introspective style Jones uses but these few spots left me wanting.
It is customary in Ottawa to acknowledge that while filming this video I was standing on unceded Algonquin, Anishinabek territory ~ with regards as ever to my Nipissing First Nation, Eagle Village First Nation, and Temagami First Nation Bear Island friends.

Here are a few books out now or super soon. As noted in the show I often toy with adding other new releases to these lists but like to keep them short too. Would it be worth making videos that are longer with other popular releases included?
Either way, we have some fabulous cover art here!

Welcome the new year in a cozy corner with a good book along with me. A little tree tour and thank you to all for hanging out and talking books! This is a holly jolly horror haul of three beautiful books from my birthday and two other books I will be reading this week over Christmas 2020.
Some Ray Bradbury, some Bram Stoker, and vampires lurk while werewolves rage in small-town Pennsylvania. A fitting list to end the year! We have a Suntup edition of Bradbury with Fahrenheit 451 and the Transylvania edition of Dracula bound in lovely red velvet. Have a wonderful holiday and a quiet week of reading before the dawn of 2021.

Here are some New Horror Books for Early December! Not a lot yet, as this is a quiet month compared to Horror-Christmas as Halloween is. Some nice collections to spruce up your haunted storytime for the winter months, and a nonfiction pick...

These are my top 5 so very open to interpretation. It goes without saying, I thought, that these are also all very well written books. There are rough books to read that lose the craft along the way just like there are extreme horror films that have low production value or lose the plot. These are books that deal with extremities and disturbing situations are not recommended for all readers even though they are expertly written and tell gut-wrenching stories.
