Typical Books of Terror: Horror Books and Fiction Discussion

A book that has stuck with me over the past few months, Andrew Pyper remixes horror with The Only Child. From psychological to gothic, his skill weaving past and present works here on many levels.

Being a fan of "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" this struck a chord with me. Paul Tremblay plays with fears, family and fans with this super hit of a novel, "A Head Full of Ghosts".

A haunting Canadian horror story, set in the wilds of Northern Ontario in a deliriously haunted mansion. A mansion on an island no less. Rowe weaves a superb tale that is far more deep than a simple ghost story. I tend to read a good selection of Canadian authors - not only because I am one and many live close but because their stories speak to me more clearly when I could reach out and touch the settings they choose.

While not a horror novel, The Snowman by Jo Nesbo is a dark crime story set in the backdrop of chilly Norway. There are no serial killers in Norway, according to inspector Harry Hole's counterparts, yet he is determined to track down and stop a killer that fits the bill. Fans of Seven, Silence of the Lambs and Citizen X will like this revolting romp and you can see why crime and horror sometimes share the same shelf.

My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf is a great and short primer on the early years of this most vile serial killer. There are loads of documentaries, podcasts and books that cover the crime but this graphic novel has the singular angle of being written by what would be considered one of his rare friends in high school. A fascinating study in how appearances aren't all they seem, but also how hindsight can warp that to show what darkness was always there in plain sight.

Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates follows the mental deterioration of one Quentin P. Obsessed with his revolting and dark fantasies, he bounces between failing school and warped visits to a psychologist never quite fitting in either place. And that makes sense, where Quentin fits is somewhere between the most vile serial killer and manipulative creep imaginable.

Nightmares in the Sky is an essay by Stephen King contained in a wonderful coffee-table book. Within, find gargoyle photos taken by f-stop Fitzgerald. Not sure who truly took the photos as the pen name is so very literary I would guess it is a fellow author or agent. The essay is so very King, and those that enjoy his addressing the Constant Reader will like this addition to their collection. Found this in Pennsylvania in a used store in wonderful condition so thank you to whoever owned this beforehand!

666 by Jay Anson is a 1981 horror novel by the same author as The Amityville Horror. This was a posthumous release, and I was very happy to find it in a random used book store.

Thought I said all I had to say on Dreadful Tales about this book? Wrong, boyo. I still think everyone and their Cerberus should read it. Twice. http://dreadfultales.com/2013/11/18/cashtown/  It may look harmless, but be warned, this is going deep into crazy land. Burgess pries open the mind of a killer and lets us have a birds eye view of a quiet rampage. Let me know what you think. Did it warp you as bad as it warped me?      Also, news about the next ChiSeries Ottawa event ~ we are holding a scary story contest and you can enter here https://www.facebook.com/events/1570588453174342/   Then, check me out on the Dead As Hell horror podcast ~ http://www.deadashellhp.com/ where I host a primer segment telling you all about horror anime and what you might have been missing.

Ooky and creepy, I enjoyed this book immensely. Deadfall Hotel was on the list while doing research and I was an instant convert, going on to seek out Steve Rasnic Tem's short stories and recent novel 'Blood Kin'.   Also, news about my new horror anime gig on the Dead As Hell horror podcast.
