Typical Books of Terror: Horror Books and Fiction Discussion

I cover books I have read that have taught me something about my own writing, or were printed in an atypical way. Sometimes, I just have something to say about typicalbooks. Like The Troop! Some liken this to early Stephen King.

Welcome to Typical books; horror fiction unbound - I am Lydia Peever, horror author and co-host of the horror film podcast Dead Air and creator of the horror booktube channel TypicalBooks.

Happy World Goth Day everyone! As a special episode, I delve into Gothicka, by Victoria Nelson. I had meant to get this one in last month during the non-fiction spree, but missed it. Good job I did, lest I have nothing to cover for this dark and dear day.   In this episode, Helper Bat helps, we see some of the upcoming books that are so very typical, shout-out to the Aftermath festival happening in Toronto today, and you even get a tour of my current nail polish. Vile! It only lasts for the first two minutes then I get into the book proper.   Gothicka covers a few contemporary literature and  film titles that fit into the hand-me-down frock belonging to Gothic Romance. Most literary horror fits this modus operandi, so I just had to pick this book up.

This is the last of the non-fiction horror and literary books on my shelves this month. We delve into the story behind the writing of Frankenstein with a path through the life of its author, Mary Shelley. Roseanne Montillo does an excellent job following the road from her birth to death providing flashes of insight, illuminating what may have been the basis and inspiration for her famous work.

This is the second-last of the non-fiction horror and literary books for this month. I'm into two fiction books right now and planning another feature month. This book has been added to my library for about a year and I have read it twice. One of those really solid reference books that I highly recommend to authors of any dark fiction. And it's by Steven Harper! With a name like that, you sure get noticed in Canada!

Still hitting some of the non-fiction horror and literary books on my shelves this month. Once my fiction reading is done, we will get back to that, but for now I have been on a reference kick. Mary Roach became one of my favourite authors with Stiff and I knew I'd love Spook. The cover and name alone sold me, and I hope my review sells you. A great read for anyone who has used a ouija board!

Being a huge vampire fan, I thought that this is where I'd like to start. Psychic vampires, sanguine vampires, life-style and role-play vampires, Russo covers it all.

Welcome to Typical books; horror fiction unbound - I am Lydia Peever, horror author and co-host of the horror film podcast Dead Air and creator of the horror booktube channel TypicalBooks. Just yesterday my good friend and listener Tom Leroux asked why I didn’t have typicalbooks as a podcast too; so here we are.

I am going to have this introduction for the first ten shows because the audio quality left much to be desired - but I want them included here to complete the set. That said, the entire show will be here so if the first few episodes of juvenalia here grab you, skip ahead ten or more episodes.

Thank you to Anchor for hosting! This is an experiment on many levels, so please comment and let me know what you are reading during your ooky spooky day, and for now, on with the show!
