Today we read the history of the Passover, the night Israel was freed from the bondage of Egypt. The Exodus will turn out to be a significant theme in Israel's history, and form a set of glasses through which to understand our salvation.

Today we read the story of Abraham and the hospitality he showed to 3 strangers in Genesis 18:1-8. We look at the New Testament vision of hospitality, and realize that the Greek word for hospitality is philoxenia (love for the stranger) which is the opposite of xenophobia (fear of the stranger). We see that love for the stranger can only happen when we know God's love for us when we were still enemies. And we ask ourselves if the message the West (and the western church) is sending to the world in regards to immigration/refugees is xenophobia or philoxenia.

We start today our Lenten series "Bread for the Journey". During these 40 days of Lent, we are on a journey to the cross with Jesus. We will eat bread, and we will be fed the Bread of Life. We will look at what the Bible has to say about bread and see how bread was present at the most significant events of the Old and New Testaments. Today's sermon is from Genesis 3:17-19, in which Adam is told that he will earn his daily bread from the sweat of his brow. In this story lie the roots of the Lenten season. Join us on this journey.

Today we look at the letter to the church at Smyrna. They were facing persecution and suffering and were encouraged to be faithful. How do we translate that into our world anno 2019?

We look today at the letter to the church at Ephesus. Ephesus was a very important city in the Greek/Roman world of the time, containing one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the temple to the goddess of fertility, Artemis/Diana. It was a complex place, difficult to be a Christian and hold allegiance to Jesus as the only rightful King of the world. According to the letter, they had lost their first love. This most likely refers to their love for one another and those around them.
