  • UV Podcast 052 – konkrit
Hey Kristoffer, could you please introduce yourself to our listeners? Moin! I’m a music journalist who usually is never short on words except when he has to say something about and for himself. I’m involved with the ANTIME label based in Berlin and occasionally put on records if someone feels generous enough to ask me to do that for them. I’m also really into cooking soups lately. What’s the idea behind your mix and how did you approach that concept? I wouldn’t consider myself a DJ and I don’t even have two turntables at home, which is utterly ridiculous taking into account the size of my record collection. So what I’m doing is that I basically glue recordings together in Audacity. If you haven’t stopped reading already, I actually do have a few things to say about this mix. 2017 has been a very disappointing year for me when it came to dance music. Hence, I found myself exploring music that I thought was fresh and somewhat different. Ironically though, that only meant that I bought a lot of old music (re-)presented to me by Western people or conceptual music: Jon Hassell reissues, Fourth World Music compilations put together by […]

  • UV Podcast 051 – Gramrcy
Could you please introduce yourself to our listeners? I make and play music as Gramrcy. It’s not my real name, but it’s not far off. What’s the idea behind your mix? I really enjoy playing music that’s all about momentum and energy – that’s what excites me. Hopefully that can be heard and felt in this mix. How did you approach that concept? How it works at the moment is I’ll put together a playlist in iTunes made up of things I’ve bought or been sent digitally and records I’ve ripped. I’ll shuffle those around until an order starts to take shape. From there it’s a process of playing around on the turntables, adding and/or removing tracks and trying out different approaches until i’m happy. Then i’ll do a live recording and hope for the best. When and where did you start djing and producing and how has it evolved over the time? I started DJing while at university in Bath, playing fairly questionable dance music on a cracked copy of Ableton and a broken midi controller. Since figuring out how to beatmatch during a summer break I’ve moved onto playing what I hope are less questionable records. I started producing […]

  • UV Funk 050: Disco Beat From India with Dr. Nepp
It's anniversary time, and there's something special for it: Dr. Nepp from Leipzig is a good friend of Philipp's, who has an amazing music collection from all over the world. For the 50th UV Funk show, he has rummaged through his boxes of disco-like music from India and Pakistan, and put together a wonderful mix that gives us an impression of how Indian and Pakistani musicians have created an opulent oeuvre with only a few elements such as a drum machine and individual strings. Under a mountain of hard to reach stuff, he has fished out some pearls that everyone should have heard.

  • UV Funk 048: Soca, Funk & Disco from the West Indies mixed by Cover
When the sun comes up over Dresden, one man is already on his bike riding to one to three flea markets to check out if there are some precious little vinyl diamonds. This man could be @cover-1, one of the most diligent diggers and DJs in the city. Over the years he made a name for himself for playing soulful Disco und House music that you should know but won’t even heard of before. When he is on holidays he tends to go to countries in which those unsung musical heroes were or are located. For instance, the islands of the West Indies to whose varied Soca, Disco and Funk scene he established a longtime love affair. At least, you can hear that in every note in his mix for UV Funk. Thanks, Cover!
