  • UV Funk 041: Soundtrack Special Part 1: Exploitation Movies
Just like Exploitation movies could be a possibility for filmmakers to realize their dirty and in many cases cheaper visions – at least compared to Hollywood’s standards – the soundtracks to those films could also be a playground for musicians to try out different techniques and sounds. For the latest UV Funk show @philipp-demankowski put a mix together with his favorite soundtrack tunes to praise those often forgotten tunes. From the legendary Funk soundtracks of the Blaxploitation movies to the raunchy rhythms of early sex comedies. There are some big names like Morricone and Schifrin but also a lot of composers who aren’t on your check list. The selected movies aren’t Exploitation movies at all costs but there is a similar vibe to the music. And if you’re more into those synth heavy Horror soundtracks check out the second part of UV Funk’s Soundtrack Special which will be uploaded soon.
There are two versions of the show. You can just listen to the music here at Soundcloud. Or you can listen to the complete radio show at Mixcloud with Philipp talking about the music and the associated movies in German: https://www.mixcloud.com/uncannyvalleydd/uv-funk-soundtrack-special-part-1-exploitation-movies/

  • UV Podcast 042 – Steffen Bennemann
Words by Steffen Bennemann: I put a lot of thought in this mix. Not so much before recording it more like after it. The prequel is quite short: I knew I had to record a new mix and I knew I wanted to do something ambient. I went to the DJ studio at Conne Island with a bunch of records. In the studio I picked a few tracks that i thought would fit somehow and then just mixed it in one take. The track order changed a few times while I mixed it. It came out a bit different than I had in my mind. After I recording it I listened to the mix a lot of times. it became a companion for all sorts of situations and it made me feel like I did the mix mainly for myself. To have something pleasing when having difficulties to sleep. Here are some of the ideas that came up in my mind. I wanted to create a mix that works on two levels: on a surface level as well as on some sort of meta level. like: it should work for entertainment as well as for deep listening. Regarding the entertainment […]

  • UV Podcast 041 – Orson Wells
Could you please introduce yourself to our listeners? Hello my name is Lennard, I live in Frankfurt am Main and I like music. What’s the idea behind your mix and how did you approach that concept? I had the idea to record a mix I would be listening to while riding a car through the night to an imaginary rave in the 90s. All records, recorded straight to tape. When and where did you started djing and producing and how has it evolved over the time? I started buying records and producing pretty much at the same time. Still searching for new sounds in tracks and synthesizers. What role does the local Tactile Record Store play for you in general and for your music career? It’s my favorite record store. Here I got introduced to music I probably never would have found on my own. Klaus the owner is a friend who I respect very much. That’s one of the reasons I started a label together with him. How and when did the music scene of Frankfurt started influencing you? I don’t know. I get most influences by hanging out with my friends. Would you say there is a new […]

  • UV Funk 040: Amiga Special
When you’ve been a musician in East Germany there wasn’t much of a choice regarding which label you can release your music on. Six sub labels were gathered under the roof of the VEB Deutsche Schallplatten, the monopolistic music publisher in the German Democratic Republic. All music considered as Pop music was released on Amiga. The catalogue consists of 2,200 albums and about 5,000 singles, with a total of 30,000 titles. The records were mostly GDR-based artists but also some licenced compilations with artists from the western hemisphere, as long as they were clearly compatible with socialist values. If you dig a little deeper you’ll find a lot of little treasures in the Amiga catalogue. @philipp-demankowski compiled some of his favourite lesser and better known examples of Funk, Soul, Disco, GDR-Kraut and Synth-Pop for the latest UV Funk radio show. Happy diggin!

  • UV Podcast 040 3/3 Finn Johannsen
How come you did 3 mixes for our podcast series? The original idea was to record mixes for my wife to listen to in the car on her way to work. She loves anything UK and bass & breakbeats related, but I have not made a mix for her before with the styles contained here. It was meant to be one longer mix at first, but then I found too many tracks in the shelves I just had to include. It was the same with a 90s Deep House retrospective I did for Modyfier early last year. I’m afraid I cannot portion myself anymore. And I hope it does not become a habit, it really messed up my weekly schedule. Can you tell us something about the concept behind every mix? The concept is really simple. Mix 1 starts with 80 BPM, Mix 3 ends with 150 BPM, halftime though. The pace gradually increases in between, and the mixes are more sequenced then mixed. Predominantly for listening purposes, but feel free to move if you want to move. The music is a diverse mix of Grime, Hip Hop, R&B, Dubstep and affiliated sounds. As mentioned, the reason I chose these […]
