Through four women — the daughters of Zelophchad, Rachel weeping on the side of the road, Miriam and the well that dried up after her unmourned death, and a more personal thread about being an eldest daughter — Yocheved traces four distinct registers of grief. Spoken and answered. Spoken and unresolved. Withheld by the collective. Withheld by the self.

What happens when grief doesn’t find its voice? Where does it go? And what becomes possible when we stop treating our patterns and symptoms as problems to solve — and start hearing them as testimony not yet heard?

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved explores the mysterious open space between the Torah portions of Korach and Chukat—a silence that stretches across thirty-eight years in the wilderness, during which Divine speech seemingly ceases.

Drawing on teachings from the Maggid of Mezritch, Rebbe Nachman, and the Alter Rebbe, she enters the relationship between speech and silence, exile and redemption, black fire and white fire. What happens when the voice of God grows quiet? What is being formed in the spaces between certainty, between insights, between chapters of our lives?

Through the imagery of the Torah scroll itself—the black letters resting upon white parchment—this episode invites us to reconsider absence, pauses, and periods of not knowing. Silence is revealed not as emptiness, but as a field of presence; not as abandonment, but as a different form of relationship.

Together, we explore the hidden longing engraved within the soul, the sacred work of learning to listen beneath words, and the paradox at the heart of spiritual life: that sometimes the deepest revelation arrives only after we release our need to understand.

A teaching for anyone moving through uncertainty, waiting, transition, or the fertile space between what has ended and what has not yet emerged.

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the story of Korach — and finds inside it not just a rebellion, but a lineage.

The wound beneath Korach’s uprising was real. The argument was sound. But what he did with the wound swallowed everything. And yet — the sons of Korach did not die. Held in an impossible liminal space between Sheol and life, their descendants became seers, prophets, Temple singers. And their darkest psalm ends without resolution. Without the face of God turning back. Just darkness — sung in public, in community, by divine decree.

This episode is personal. It asks what it means that unresolved grief belongs in sacred space. That you don’t need to fix your suffering before you bring it to God. And what becomes possible when we stop demanding resolution.

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the story of the spies — one of the most pivotal ruptures in the Torah — and asks: why did ten of the twelve collapse when they encountered the land?

Drawing on the Beit Yaakov of the Ishbitzer and the kabbalistic teaching of arousal from above and below, Yocheved traces a formula for meeting complexity without collapse: autonomy, connection, and compassion. The grasshopper consciousness — there isn’t room for both of us — is not just a historical moment. It’s a nervous system state. A way of perceiving that collapses space when the field feels too big.

And the antidote? A rope. The chevel. The thread that holds us vertical when everything feels overwhelming.

We’re in the Omer now. Pesach gave us freedom from. The Omer asks the harder question: what are we moving toward? Drawing on the Alter Rebbe’s Likkutei Torah, Yocheved traces the leper’s arc — a four-part journey embedded in the Torah’s own sequence: the wound that surfaces on the skin of an otherwise whole person, the loving witness who receives us first, the radical honesty of naming what’s here, and the integration that happens in solitude before we return to be witnessed again.
