From Romans 3:21 to Romans 5:21, Paul has gone into great detail explaining the doctrine of God’s free grace to guilty sinners. God justifies the ungodly through the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. We have complete forgiveness, peace with God, unending access to the throne of grace, and a permanent standing of being declared not guilty before a holy God. This is terrific news.

 Some people respond to the gospel in one of two ways:

It is this second abuse of God’s grace that Paul now draws our attention to. There is a shift in Chapter 6. The focus is now on SANCTIFICATION—the process of living out our justification.

We live in an American culture that is divided, and many are hostile to the gospel of Christ. How can we faithfully engage the lost?

Dr. Sean Cole preaches a sermon that addresses four key issues:

First,  the biblical mandate to preach the gospel.

Second, a brief history of American culture and its attitude toward Christianity.

Third,  two competing models for engaging culture that evangelical Christians can adopt.

The first method is the Third Way winsome approach to engaging culture. Pastor Tim Keller advocated this approach and has influenced many within conservative Reformed evangelicalism to abandon what he calls the far-right fundamentalists and the far-left progressives, and to create a new middle, or third way, that values being winsome, non-combative, nuanced, and more focused on winning over liberals and progressives to the gospel.

This model MAY work in some cases, but if we live in a negative world, there may be a better strategy or way forward.

However, there is another model: The bold, unapologetic John the Baptist model.

Fourth, Pastor Sean offers a way forward by giving seven action steps churches can take to faithfully engage culture with boldness in a negative world.

What is authentic gospel preaching? How do I practice biblical evangelism? Is there a pattern or blueprint for sharing the gospel with boldness?

First, we must confront people with their sin and guilt.

Second, we must warn people of the reality of hell.

Third, we must call people to repent with urgency.

In Romans 5:1-11, we see FIVE blessings or benefits of our justification.

Blessing One: We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessing Two: We have obtained permanent access to this extraordinary, lasting grace.

Blessing Three: One of the fruits of true salvation is difficulties and hardships ordained by God for our growth and His glory.

Blessing Four:  We are not put to shame because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Blessing Five: Christ died in the place of helpless and ungodly enemies of God.

We no longer live in an America where the vast majority of people hold to some degree of Biblical morality or appreciate the Christian faith. As Christians, we can sometimes be objects of scorn, ridicule, and hatred.

And this should not surprise us because Christ Himself was also an object of scorn, ridicule, and hatred.

What’s the central point of Matthew 2:12-23 in Herod's wicked plot to kill the baby Jesus: Followers of Christ should expect intense spiritual warfare.

If you are a Christian, you will experience times of suffering. You will experience times of sobbing. You will experience times of scorn.

So, how do you endure? How do you withstand the assaults? How do you handle this intense spiritual warfare? How do you fight the good fight of faith?

Paul spent three Chapters describing in graphic detail both the sin of pagan Gentiles and self-righteous Jews. (Romans 1-3) All people are under the power of sin and need a positive righteousness that comes from Christ alone.

This imputed righteousness from Christ is justification whereby God legally declares us not guilty. There is no room for boasting because our salvation from first to last is an act of God’s sheer grace and mercy to sinners who only deserve condemnation in hell.

In Romans Chapter 4, Paul uses Abraham as an extended illustration to show that salvation comes by TRUSTING in Christ alone, not by works. 

In Genesis 15:6, Abraham believed the LORD, and it was counted to him as righteousness.

When we trust in Christ alone, we are also counted righteous by God's grace.

Joy to the World, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing,

The birth of Christ is the birth of the King. Will your heart prepare Him room? Will you receive your King?
