Understanding Christianity

In Romans 3:9-20, we see the devastating reality of Total Depravity. Paul charges that both Jews and Gentiles are under sin. We are all hopeless, helpless, and hellbound without Christ as our Savior.

In Matthew 1:18-25, we see the account of the virgin birth of Christ, the King. 

In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole explores THREE glorious truths that God guarantees us in the birth of Jesus.

Truth One: The miraculous virgin birth guarantees a holy and sufficient Savior.

The virgin birth is crucial to our faith. Jesus is the sinless Savior who is fully God and fully Man and the only worthy Sacrifice to stand in the gap for our sins.

Truth Two: Christ’s finished work on the cross guarantees our complete salvation.

He saves us fully and finally on the cross!

Truth Three: Christ’s birth guarantees that God will always be with us.

Only through Jesus as our Immanuel can God truly be with us.

In Romans 2:17-3:8, Paul specifically addresses self-righteous Jews who stood in judgment on uncircumcised Gentiles. 

The Jews were self-confident in their knowledge of the Law, but actually didn’t practice what they preached. The Jews were self-confident in their circumcision, but what they really needed was an inward spiritual change through the new birth.

Before we can receive this good news of salvation, we have to be laid bare in our sin before a holy God and understand that He has the right to pour out His wrath on sinners in judgment—whether that’s a pagan Gentile, a self-righteous circumcised Jew who thinks he can obey the Ten Commandments, and... you and me.

Dr. Sean Cole continues the sermon series in Matthew called "Christ is King." In Chapter 1:2-17, we encounter a list of names that we may sometimes be tempted to skip over in the genealogy of Jesus. We may say, “Oh, it’s just a bunch of names... who cares who the father of so and so was?"

God’s sovereign grace to guilty sinners is MAGNIFIED in Jesus’ family tree.

 The shocking truth of Jesus’ family tree is the list of guilty sinners. These are real people, not ideal heroes. These are fallen people, not perfect saints. These are guilty people, not those who earned God’s favor. What we see clearly, magnified in full HD, is that Jesus came to save guilty sinners, and His family tree proves it overwhelmingly.

In Romans 2:1-16, Paul addresses self-righteous Jews after confronting pagan Gentiles in Chapter 1.  Here is a summary of this passage:

The self-righteous person who judges others and yet commits those same sins will be condemned.

God’s judgment is never unjust but right

God is good and gives time for people to repent and escape that judgment

God will judge every single person—the Christian will not be judged for eternal life, but his or her works will prove authentic faith. The non-Christian will be judged for suppressing the truth, seeking self-pleasure, and disobedience.

People will be individually judged by what they know is right and wrong, and failure to do it, whether the written Ten Commandments or a law within their hearts.

Many of you are probably just as shocked, saddened, and angered at the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk as I was when I heard the news. This was an act of pure evil targeted at a man who was vocal and unapologetic about his political and cultural views, but more importantly, his relationship with Christ.
