  • Are You Appalled or Astonished? ISAIAH 52:13-15

Dr. Sean Cole explores the glories of Calvary in the Suffering Servant song in Isaiah 52:13-53:12

This section in Isaiah is a poem composed of five stanzas, each with three lines. We see THREE prophecies concerning Jesus in this first stanza:

First, Jesus will accomplish His mission successfully.

Second, Jesus will suffer physical torture as the Messiah.

Third, Jesus’ message of forgiveness will be preached all over the world.

Are you astonished at the death, burial, and resurrection of King Jesus?

Or are you appalled at His death? Are you ambivalent about His sacrifice? Are you even antagonistic to Jesus as Lord of lords?

May you be astonished at the victory of Jesus, who died a cruel death on the cross, was buried in a tomb, rose again on the third day, ascended to heaven, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father in power and glory as our exalted King!

  • The Absolute Sovereignty of God: ISAIAH 46:8-13

Isaiah 46:8-13 teaches that God is absolutely sovereign.

He can do whatever He wants, whenever He wants, however He wants, with no one to challenge Him or stop Him from accomplishing His will.

God’s decisions are not contingent on human choices. Nobody can force God’s hand or manipulate or sway Him to act how they want Him to act.

These are not arbitrary decisions made by God, but because He is self-existent as the Great I AM, He has the sovereign right to do whatever HE wants.

How do we respond to God's absolute sovereignty and what should this truth produce in us? Listen as Dr. Sean Cole preaches this powerful passage of Scripture.

  • Look to Jesus! ISAIAH 45:15-25

God used this passage in Isaiah to save Charles Spurgeon on January 6,1850, in the dead of winter in a major snowstorm. Look to Jesus and be saved, all the ends of the earth!

Dr. Sean Cole examines four truths from Isaiah 45.

First, hell is the eternal destiny of unbelievers.

Second, Jesus is the one and only way of salvation.

Third, the invitation to trust in Jesus extends to all people everywhere.

Fourth, God created us to glorify Him forever for this great salvation.

  • The Bondage of Idolatry: ISAIAH 44:6-20

Isaiah 44 teaches the devastation of idolatry. Idolatry will only leave you in the darkness of spiritual bondage.

Idolatry, at its core, is exchanging, replacing, or substituting the glory, majesty, and power of the living God for things He has created. Those can be good things like a spouse, children, a job, or a project. Or they can be bad things like sexual immorality, materialism, ego, and popularity.

Either way, the great horror of idolatry is that Christ alone is not enough to satisfy you and give you meaning and purpose and security, so you exchange all that He is for something or someone else that you foolishly think will provide you that satisfaction, security, and purpose.

Idolatry is foolish, confusing, blinding, and eventually enslaving. Listen as Dr. Sean Cole preaches this passage and it's warning against idolatry.

  • Strength Will Rise When We Wait Upon the Lord: ISAIAH 40:27-31

In Isaiah 40:27-31, the Israelites think God has forgotten them and is coldly distant. When weary, tired, frustrated, and wondering if God cares and why we suffer, people charge God with falsehoods. They begin to think unbiblical things about God.

Objection One: If God doesn’t end my suffering, He must not be good or loving.

The first thing we do is question God’s goodness. He must not care about me anymore, and he must not love me anymore.

Objection Two: If God doesn’t end my suffering, He must not be powerful or sovereign enough.

We may believe that God is loving, but we question His ability. Maybe He’s not as powerful as we thought, after all. Maybe my problems are too big for God to handle.

God answers their complaint with a promise to renew their strength. This power comes when we wait upon the Lord. What doe it mean to WAIT? Listen and find out.

  • EPHESIANS 6:1-9 Gospel-Centered Parenting and Being a Godly Employee

In Ephesians 6:1-9, Paul addresses two issues: parenting and slaves and masters. In this teaching session, Dr. Sean Cole examines how parents should raise their children in the fear of the Lord. He also shows how Christians should act in their employment. How does being Spirit-filled impact how we parent and how we live out our faith on the job?

  • Leighton Flowers, the Quran, the Bible, and Necessary Grace

Leading Provisionist Leighton Flowers of Soteriology 101 created a duststorm on Twitter/X recently with comments about the nature of the Quran and the Bible. Dr. Sean Cole interacts with the Provisionism view of the nature of the gospel appeal and the written Scriptures. They believe the gospel appeal is the supernatural, miraculous intervention that is alone sufficient to enable a positive response to Christ. Instead, the Reformed view understands the need for both Word AND Spirit in regeneration.

We distinguish between the efficient cause of regeneration and the instrumental cause. What is the efficient cause? The Holy Spirit. What is the instrumental cause? The Word.

The Provisionist perspective does not differentiate between the efficient and instrumental causes of regeneration.

It perceives the Word solely as the instrumental cause and does not recognize the need for the Spirit to perform an internal work, which is ultimately the efficient cause of the new birth and the granting of saving faith.

The Reformed view maintains that external preaching of the Word of God is necessary so that sinners can hear the gospel.

However, this alone is not sufficient. Alongside the external Word, the Holy Spirit must carry out an internal, supernatural work on the dead heart, mind, and will to overcome moral and spiritual inability and bring a person to life.

  • Nothing Compares to our Glorious God! ISAIAH 40:12-26

Nothing in all creation compares to our glorious God. God has no equals.

Why is this important? Don’t most people assume this truth?

We live in a godless culture that:

    Denies the existence of God.

    Hates the sovereignty of God.

Rebels against the authority of God.

    Wants to BE God!

When you’re going through times of difficulty or depression or despondency or you lack assurance or security, the best thing you can do is to think about the majesty and glory of God.

Despairing, hurting people need to open their eyes and hearts to BEHOLD your GOD and truly see and understand His majesty and glory. Isaiah gives us a powerful and gripping description of who God is and how nothing in all creation compares to His glory. In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole explores FOUR glorious attributes of our great God that Isaiah calls us to BEHOLD.

  • Provisionism: Ten Years Later

Dr. Sean Cole has interacted with Leighton Flowers at Soteriology 101 and Provisionism for the last TEN years. In this podcast, he addresses a few Twitter/X posts that clearly teach Provisionist theology. Two key planks of their system are: (1) A denial of total inability/libertarian free will after the Fall, and (2) a denial of the effectual, internal call, which they claim is "extra" grace. They only believe the outward gospel call is the sufficient grace needed to enable a sinner to respond positively to God's appeal to be reconciled. Listen as Sean unpacks their theology and gives the Reformed counterpoints.
