On this episode of Speaking Sessions, we're talking about the do's and don'ts of public speaking. Philip is a public speaking coach and he has curated three tips that people are often told to do when addressing an audience, but instead, they should stop doing. The most common problem is breathing into the mic and this is not a good practice. As an audience member, hearing someone breathe right into the mic is a little weird and uncomfortable. The second tip concerns movement during presentations. Walking back and forth across the stage can be distracting, and some speakers can cover up to two miles during an hour-long speech due to excessive movement. Finally, the third tip is not revealed in this excerpt, but can you guess what it is? Philip shares his insights on how to move on stage without coming across as rehearsed and unnatural. He emphasizes how important it is to be confident when speaking in public and what you can do to inspire trust in your audience.

"Wherever I am, I always prefer to thank the people who made it possible, thank the audience for being part of the journey, and for inviting you into their experience." – Steve
"If you are out there stealing other people's stuff, you've not yet clearly defined who you are." – Steve
"You will be more successful yourself if you do your own style." – Philip
"Don't try to be anyone else, just be yourself. The stronger you get with it you become iconic in a way." – Steve
"When people just wing it, they go way over their time. They never know exactly where they wanna end or where they even want to take the audience." – Philip
"Never leave people sad." – Steve
"Go out there as an introvert and speak because that's a superpower." – Philip
"I work the hardest to reach the people I can't see, who are sitting in the dark, who are afraid to come into the light because they don't feel they're worthy of it. They're the people I have to work the hardest to get to and I'm the most humble to reach as well, and I don't talk down to them at all because that's where I used to sit." – Steve

"I'm here to tell you that there's no reason to be fearful because everything you ever do in public speaking or speaking of any sort, it's just a conversation, be it between two people, 20 people, 100 people, a million people, it's simply still a conversation." – Jane
"People will forget what you did. They'll forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel." – Jane
"You can engage with that audience, and they can engage back with you." – Philip
"And one of the most crucial and incredible things that you need to do then is to have super great eye contact... I look at people in the eye and I look at them because that makes them know that they are important to you." – Jane
"The pauses, they're the most underutilized tool we have. Super good speakers dare to take a pause... So take a pause. That's all you have to do is take a pause." – Jane
"I would love people to understand the art of communication. That really there's two parts of it. One is talking and one is listening... I really believe that if we listen better, we would communicate better and we would be so much better in this world." – Jane
"We just want to listen to respond rather than listen to actually give an answer and understand what the person is trying to say." – Philip
