In the 1998 film ‘Patch Adams’, Robin Williams played the titular character, blessing us with a plethora of thought-provoking quotes. One such was: "You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you'll win, no matter what the outcome.” Ben, my guest this week, and I did not mention Patch or his quotes, but his message ran clearly through our conclusions. In essence, holistic health doesn’t have to invoke the image of drinking water laced with onion drops whilst the practitioner hums and spins three times on his left foot with a daffodil upside down in his right hand. Instead it can, and should, mean that we have a human being in front of us — a human being with strengths and weaknesses, triumphs and flaws, and most of all, a complex life. And therefore, the treatment of their issues ought to consider much of their life.

The article could have talked about the diversity celebrated at the Oscar’s this year and finally what this means for young actors with disabilities. Instead these achievements were slapped off stage by a man who received no repercussions for his actions.

You can either climb a ladder and clip each dying leaf from the tree, brushing away the pests and hosing the base for all to see, before moving on to the neighbouring tree in the park and starting the process again, or you can build a self-watering system to hydrate all the trees. You won't be seen, you won't feel the same attachment to each tree, and you won't receive the attention and respect from others, but you will be able to move onto the next park solving issues there. This is how Henry started the episode, comparing direct and indirect effects and their scale, a metaphor for Public Health versus Clinical Medicine. In less than half an hour, it concluded differently.

I mentioned, again, Gregory Lewis’ article from 80000.org and it is a worthy read for all, but feel free to especially forward it to any doctors who think that they are doing God’s work, in an attempt to bring them back to Earth, or to those regretful types in other professions wishing they went into Health, to boost their spirits and give them ideas on how they can contribute meaningfully to others in need.

Kajanan joins Henry to return to the topic of world views. Born in Australia, with opportunity and prosperity, Kajanan is hyperaware that had circumstances been ever so slightly different, he could easily have been on a farm in rural Sri Lanka, never having attended school, living a life that shared no resemblance to the one he lives now. He shares how this led to a sense of obligation to always do as much good as possible and put it out in the world.

That’s a lot of pressure for one person to place on themselves every single day!

The pair begin by discussing various factors that will affect the overseas experience, like phones, language-learning, and how individuals choose to travel, whether solo, camping, in a tour, with homestays, etc.

Finally, Helenna remembers how by complete accident she avoided a terrible outbreak of Covid-19 abroad and, like so many others, the pandemic sent her on a completely new trajectory, leaving that old life behind.

This was a fun episode, and whilst full of laughs, at its core was the sad realisation that sometimes an impenetrable roadblock is placed on our dreams and we have no choice but to turn around.
