Economists have warned consumers to brace themselves to a further increase in the cost of living ahead the expected increase in a number of items this week, including the price of fuel. The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group announced that the average cost in the country's Household Food Basket increased by R66.96 in May, to R4 609,89. Statistics South Africa's unemployment rate has come in slightly lower at 34-point-5 percent from 35-point-3 percent in the fourth quarter. The latest figures have released that the number of unemployed people now stands at 7-million-862-thousand. According to an expanded definition of unemployment that includes those discouraged from seeking work, 45-point-5 percent of the labour force was without work in the first quarter, compared with 46-point-2 percent in the fourth quarter. Motorists will face a massive fuel price increase this week.  The unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) shows fuel increase across the board.  It says consumers will face further pressure because government's earlier relief of reducing the General Fuel Levy (GFL) has ended, Latest estimates predict petrol to increase by almost three Rands a litre at 2-Rand-37 cents while diesel will go up by 2-Rand 62 cents a litre. Western Cape Community Safety minister Reagan Allen has expressed anger following the latest mass shooting incidents in Cape Town. Allen has reassured residents that the perpetrators of the incidents will be arrested speedily. On Monday, provincial police confirmed that two brothers and their sister were shot and killed on Sunday night in Ekuphumleni in Khayelitsha. Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has given words of encouragement to learners of Khanya Lesedi Secondary School East of Johannesburg following the passing of three boys after they allegedly consumed an energy drink given to them by their father. Preliminary reports allege that the father of the three deceased gave all his five children energy drinks in the morning while they were preparing for school.
