The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast

Use Incident Investigation Techniques Even When Things Are Going Well

Listen Later

Recently, whilst running the IOSH Safety Management course, Colin sat back and reflected a little bit on accident investigation case studies discussed.

He noted there were 4 bullet points;

  1. Making a safer working environment
  2. Improving worker morale
  3. Preventing further business disruptions and downtime
  4. Developing useful skills & Knowledge that can be applied throughout the organisation

Colin thinks these are all fantastic things every business should be doing all the time, not only when there is an incident.

When there is an incident, there are a lot more people involved; management and even the senior management team join in. Colin wants to know, why aren’t we doing this already rather than only when there’s a problem, or worse a serious incident? Perhaps this could be avoided if we consider these 4 bullet points every day and on every job; not just as resolution to an incident

Rather than ‘accident investigations’; maybe call them ‘business improvement investigations’?… Because if you’re going to do it when its going well; then you’re going to hopefully find the potential downfalls before they happen
