The Dream Journal

Using Dreams in Therapy and also Dream Telepathy with Suzanne Maniss, PhD

Listen Later

DreamStar Free Online Counseling, using dreams in therapy and her experiences with dream telepathy. Our conversation this week is with Professor Suzanne Maniss of U Texas Rio Grande. We start out talking about how little clinical health workers learn about dreams which is similar to the small amount that medical doctors learn about nutrition. The dominant therapy mode is currently cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which is geared toward controlling symptoms rather than shifting underlying causes. Suzanne describes this as a “whack a mole” approach.

Suzanne describes her work with Scott Sparrow, PhD and how they teach graduate students to incorporate dreaming into therapy. You can apply for free sessions from these students and also take courses to learn about the technique at DreamStarInstitute.com.

After the break we got more personal and speculative. Suzanne’s son Jeremy called in from Dallas and shared how they used to talk about his dreams on the way to school. Suzanne then shared an uncomfortable experience of dream telepathy. Finally, we took a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who synchronistically wanted to ask about dream telepathy and had clicked into the system before we started talking about it.

BIO: Dr. Suzanne Maniss is professor and chair of the Department of Counseling at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Suzanne is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and first became interested in dreams during her graduate studies, as a result of which she spent ten years in Jungian analysis. Throughout her academic career, Dr. Maniss has found that students are very interested in dream work and has been able to share basic theories and techniques through elective courses and professional development workshops in the community. Most recently, she has collaborated with Dr. Scott Sparrow to bring these ideas to the students at U Texas, Rio Grande.
