If you’ve ever been enthralled by the latest teen fiction, the drama, the adventure, the passion, then let’s face it- you’re just like the rest of us. We all love a good book. After all, they help us let go of our stress and escape into a fictional world, where anything is possible, no matter who you are.
But… is it? Teen fiction, while certainly branching out and challenging stereotypes in recent years, still has a tendency to be formulaic, to prioritize certain characters and lifestyles over others. One vastly underrepresented group in teen fiction are people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. So, today, let’s look at disability and illness representation in teen fiction- where it’s been, where it is now, and maybe even where it’s going.
