The bookseller

Besides its function as a residence and a printing works, the house of the Moretus family was also a bookshop.

Aussensalon

Einen Baustil, der ganz im Zeichen der Renaissance steht: viele waagerechte Linien, Backstein wechselt sich mit Streifen weißen Sandsteins ab, die Fenster sind kreuzförmig viergeteilt, und es gibt eine Arkade, beziehungsweise Galerie. Wenn es das Wetter gestattet, wandern Sie ruhig auf den alten Pflastersteinen herum.

Aire de détente

De l'ensemble émane véritablement une atmosphère de la Renaissance : lignes horizontales dominantes, briques alternant avec des bandes de grès blanches, fenêtres à croisillons, sans oublier les arcades ou galeries. Prenez le temps de fouler les vieux pavés de ces allées, du moins si le temps est clément.

Outside drawing room

The whole space evokes the Renaissance: horizontal lines dominate, bricks alternate with a course of white sandstone, the windows are framed in the shape of a cross and we have a gallery. Feel free to walk across the cobbled stones, weather permitting of course.

Plantin war der Stammvater von neun Generationen, die in diesem Haus wohnten und arbeiteten.

Hall of fame

Hier im großen Salon, rechts vom Kamin, lernen wir den Firmengründer Christoffel Plantin kennen und zur Rechten sehen wir seine Frau Jeanne Rivière. Auf der linken Seite des Kamins befinden sich Porträts ihrer nächsten Nachfahren: Schwiegersohn Jan I. Moretus und dessen Frau Martina Plantin. Und am Eingang hängt das Porträt ihres Sohnes: Der unverheiratete Balthasar I. Moretus.

Le panthéon

Dans ce grand salon, à droite de la cheminée, nous rencontrons le fondateur, Christophe Plantin et son épouse, Jeanne Rivière. A gauche de la cheminée, nous contemplons les portraits de leurs premiers successeurs : leur gendre, Jean Ier Moretus et son épouse Martine Plantin. Enfin, un portrait de la troisième génération est accroché près de l'entrée, il s’agit de Balthasar Ier Moretus, leur fils célibataire.

Hall of fame

Here in the Large Drawing-room, to the right of the fireplace, we can see the founder Christoffel Plantijn and his wife Jeanne Rivière. To the left of the fireplace hang portraits of their first descendants: their son-in-law Jan I Moretus and his wife Martina Plantijn. By the entrance we see the portrait of the third generation, Jan and Martina’s unmarried son Balthasar I Moretus.
