Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Brazil. We bevinden ons hier op Monte das Tabocas, in de gemeente Vitória de Santo Antão, dicht bij Recife. Hier werd op 3 augustus 1645 de Slag bij Tabocas uitgevochten, het eerste gewapende conflict tussen de Portugezen en de Nederlanders, dat culmineerde in de verdrijving van de Nederlanders uit Brazilië in 1654.

There are those who worship the Dutch, and in particular the Dutch governor-general between 1637 and 1644, Maurice de Nassau, as a “good colonizer”, a man concerned with development, arts and sciences in the colony.

Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Brazil. No local onde se desenrolaram as duas batalhas decisivas entre portugueses e holandeses, as chamadas Batalhas dos Guararapes, em 1648 e 1649, foi construída esta igreja em que estamos agora. Uma homenagem à vitória dos lusos-brasileiros, dedicada a Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres.

Op de plek van de twee beslissende veldslagen tussen de Portugezen en de Nederlanders, de zogenaamde Guararapes Veldslagen, in 1648 en 1649, werd, korte tijd later, de kerk gebouwd die we hier voor ons zien. Een eerbetoon aan de overwinning van de Portugees-Brazilianen, gewijd aan Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Vreugde.

Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Brazil. On the site of the two decisive battles between the Portuguese and the Dutch, the so-called Guararapes Battles, in 1648 and 1649, we find the church we see here. A tribute to the victory of the Portuguese-Brazilians, dedicated to Our Lady of Joy.

Recife, Brazil. Estamos em frente ao Teatro de Santa Isabel, no bairro de Santo Antônio, centro do Recife. Inaugurado em 1850, recebeu este nome em homenagem à Princesa Isabel, filha do segundo e último Imperador do Brasil, Dom Pedro II, que reinou entre 1840 e 1889, quando foi deposto por golpe que resultou na proclamação da República.

Recife, Brazil. We staan hier voor het Santa Isabel Theater, in de wijk Santo Antônio, in het centrum van Recife. Het theater werd ingehuldigd in 1850 en kreeg de naam van prinses Isabel, dochter van de tweede en laatste keizer van Brazilië, Dom Pedro II, die regeerde tussen 1840 en 1889, toen hij werd afgezet in een staatsgreep die resulteerde in de proclamatie van de Republiek.
