Albany, United States. After the United States declared its independence from the United Kingdom on July 2, 1776, Albany became the capital of the state of New York the next year. The city had already been chartered, given official status as a city, in 1686, making it the oldest city in the state, after it had been named Albany when the English had taken over the colony from the Dutch in 1664.

João Pessoa, Brazil. Estamos em frente à reitoria da Universidade Federal da Paraíba, uma instituição pública de Ensino Superior no Nordeste do Brasil, que completa 70 anos em 2025. Daqui deste campus, na capital João Pessoa, jovens pesquisadores e pesquisadoras conduzem estudos contemporâneos sobre um importante período da história do Brasil: a ocupação holandesa no Brasil do Século 17.

We staan hier voor één van de gebouwen van de Federale Universiteit van Paraíba, een openbare instelling voor hoger onderwijs in het noordoosten van Brazilië, die in 2025 70 jaar bestaat. Vanaf deze campus in de stad João Pessoa voeren jonge onderzoekers onderzoek uit over een belangrijke periode in de Braziliaanse geschiedenis: de Nederlandse bezetting in de 17e eeuw.

We find ourselves in front of the rectory of the Federal University of Paraíba, a public higher education institution in the north-east of Brazil, which will be 70 years old in 2025. From this campus in the capital João Pessoa, young researchers are conducting contemporary studies on an important period in Brazilian history: the Dutch occupation of 17th century Brazil.

O passado colonial holandês no Brasil, que se estendeu de 1630 a 1654, é amplamente documentado, mas sua importância é percebida de forma distinta nas historiografias holandesa e brasileira. O Arquivo Nacional Holandês, localizado em Haia, onde nos encontramos agora, abriga uma vasta quantidade de documentos relacionados à Companhia das Índias Ocidentais e aos empreendimentos coloniais holandeses, incluindo aqueles referentes ao Brasil. Het Nederlandse koloniale verleden in Brazilië, van 1630 tot 1654, is uitgebreid gedocumenteerd, maar het belang en de relevantie van deze periode wordt behoorlijk anders bekeken in de Nederlandse en Braziliaanse geschiedschrijving. Het Nationaal Archief in Den Haag, waar we ons nu bevinden, bevat een schat aan documenten met betrekking tot de West-Indische Compagnie en de Nederlandse koloniale activiteiten, waaronder die met betrekking tot Brazilië. Dit archief fungeert als een cruciaal onderzoekscentrum voor historici die zich verdiepen in de Nederlandse overzeese geschiedenis. This archive serves as a crucial research hub for historians delving into Dutch overseas history. However, the Dutch presence in Brazil remains a secondary topic in Dutch history, often overshadowed by the more prolonged colonial experiences in Indonesia and Suriname.
