The Hague, The Netherlands. O alemão João Maurício de Nassau-Siegen alistou-se no exército holandês ainda muito jovem, aos 16 anos. Embora fosse de uma família respeitável, com ligações reais, seu pai havia gasto quase todos os seus recursos apoiando a guerra de independência dos Países Baixos contra a Espanha. Isso significava que, para Maurício, o décimo terceiro filho, pouco havia restado.

The Hague, The Netherlands. De Duitser Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen trad op jonge leeftijd, slechts 16 jaar oud, in dienst bij het Nederlandse leger. Hoewel hij afkomstig was uit een respectabele familie met koninklijke connecties, had zijn vader het grootste deel van zijn financiën besteed aan het ondersteunen van de Nederlandse onafhankelijkheidsoorlog tegen Spanje. Voor Maurits, het dertiende kind van zijn vader, bleef er daardoor weinig over.

Though from a respectable family with royal connections, his father had spent most of his resources supporting the Dutch independence war against Spain, which meant that for John, his father’s 13th child, there was little left to go around.

Cape Town, South Africa. O termo “polímata” remonta a pelo menos 1603, quando foi usado pela primeira vez no título de uma obra publicada pelo alemão Johann van Wowern. Ele definiu a polimatia como "o conhecimento de diversos assuntos, extraído de todos os tipos de estudos... percorrendo livremente todos os campos das disciplinas, até onde a mente humana, com incansável esforço, for capaz de alcançar".

Cape Town, South Africa. De term ‘polymath’ gaat terug tot ten minste 1603, toen deze voor het eerst werd gebruikt in de titel van een gepubliceerd werk van de Duitser Johann van Wowern. Hij definieerde polymathie als "kennis van verschillende zaken, gehaald uit allerlei studies ... vrijelijk bewegend door alle disciplines, voor zover het menselijk verstand, met onvermoeibare ijver, deze kan nastreven".

In het Nederlands wordt in plaats van ‘polymath’ vaak de term ‘homo universalis’ gebruikt.
