Recife, Brazil. We zijn hier in de haven van Recife, waar de Nederlandse Sara Hendricx in 1637 aan land kwam. Haar verhaal, gefragmenteerd en gereconstrueerd uit verschillende documenten uit die tijd, onderstreept de machts- en genderrelaties die het leven, het lichaam, en de keuzes van vrouwen onderdrukten, en nog steeds onderdrukken, als ook de ondergeschikte rol die hen in de westerse geschiedschrijving wordt toebedeeld.

Recife, Brazil. We are in the Port of Recife, where the Dutch woman Sara Hendricx landed in 1637. She arrived in Brazil dressed as a man on a ship belonging to the Dutch West India Company, the private company that explored possessions in America and Africa on behalf of the Dutch State in the 17th century. Her story, fragmented and reconstructed from different documents from the period, reinforces the power and gender relations that so oppressed and still oppress women's lives, bodies and choices, as well as the secondary role relegated to them in Western historiography.

Tamandaré, Brazil. Estamos na pequena cidade de Porto Calvo, a paróquia mais antiga do estado de Alagoas. Os portugueses expulsaram a população original da área no século 16 e começaram a cultivar cana-de-açúcar aqui. Em 1609, nasceu neste local seu filho mais famoso, e talvez o traidor mais famoso do Brasil: Domingos Fernandes Calabar.

Tamandaré, Brazil. We zijn nu in het plaatsje Porto Calvo, de oudste parochie in de staat Alagoas. De Portugezen verdreven hier de oorspronkelijke bevolking in de 16e eeuw om suikerriet te verbouwen. Tamandaré, Brazil. We’re in the tiny town of Porto Calvo, the oldest parish in the state of Alagoas. The Portuguese expelled the original population from the area in the 16th century, and started cultivating sugarcane. Then, in 1609, its most famous son, and perhaps Brazil’s most famous traitor, Domingos Fernandes Calabar was born here.

Recife, Brazil. Estamos em frente à Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores, no bairro de Apipucos, zona norte do Recife. Localizada em um dos bairros mais bucólicos da capital pernambucana, a igrejinha vale uma visita, mas estamos aqui porque, neste mesmo local, no século 17, essas terras faziam parte de um dos poucos engenhos do período de propriedade de uma mulher: Jerônima de Almeida, uma senhora de engenho que viveu no século 17, e teve uma trajetória marcante no período da ocupação holandesa no Brasil, durante a União Ibérica, entre 1580 e 1640.

Recife, Brazil. We stand in front of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, in the neighborhood of Apipucos, north of Recife. The little church is worth a visit, but we're here because on this very land, in the 17th century, Jerônima de Almeida, a remarkable woman, ran a sugar mill, while pushing back against the Dutch occupation.

Recife, Brazil. O Rio de Janeiro abriga vários clubes de futebol, mas o mais bem-sucedido e o mais popular do país, com cerca de 22% da população brasileira como torcedora, é o Flamengo.
