After his latest speech, President Biden is taking some heat from Democrats and Republicans. National Review has more on the speech:  

Rich observes that Biden’s speech this evening was “abysmal.” “Stylistically,” he submits, “the speech was meandering, cliched, and repetitive, and Biden’s delivery was notably lifeless.” Jim describes it as “the same old stuff, served many times before, zapped in a microwave.” I agree. Moreover, I think that this was probably inevitable. The president has convinced himself that claiming to represent democracy is a winning message, but he also knows that, last time around, he looked absolutely ridiculous while doing so. The resultant compromise yielded the worst of both worlds: Biden eschewed the Star Wars aesthetic that so excited his partisan fans, while delivering a dull, partisan, self-serving address that anyone with a brain could see straight through. It’ll be forgotten by tomorrow morning — if not sooner.

Breitbart reports that GOP congressional candidates are pulling ahead in 10 different congressional districts but will we see the red wave that many are predicting? 

The story of Emmett Till is making the rounds again as a new film outlines the tragedy and unanswered questions surrounding the murder of Emmett Till. Mercury News has more:  

Carolyn Bryant Donham was never held legally responsible for her alleged role in the horrific kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in Mississippi, and, at 88, has reportedly lived out her final years in relative tranquility in Kentucky. 

In her unpublished memoir, however, Donham said she “always felt like a victim as well as Emmett” and “paid dearly with an altered life” for what happened to him. 

The acclaimed new film, “Till,” makes the case for why Donham deserves no sympathy and instead should have been prosecuted for the lynching, one of the most brutal moments in America’s history of racial segregation. Donham set the tragic events in motion after she accused the boy from Chicago of making improper advances to her when he stepped into her rural grocery store on Aug. 24, 1955 to buy bubble gum.

A Shaw University bus full of students was pulled over. Some students believe it was racially motivated and want the traffic stop investigated. Goupstate.com has more on the story:  

The Spartanburg and Cherokee Sheriff's Offices released the body camera footage of an Oct. 5 traffic stop of a bus containing Shaw University students and staff on Monday morning. 

Shaw University is a historically Black university located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright and Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller dismissed allegations of racial profiling and targeting the Shaw University personnel in the traffic stop. 

The stop occurred in Spartanburg County, but the search was conducted by Cherokee County deputies as part of Operation Rolling Thunder, an escalated week-long operation by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, along with other agencies, to seize illegal contraband, including narcotics, illegal weapons, and cash, along Interstates 85 and 26. This year's operation seized almost $1 million in currency. 

A new Gallup poll says the state of the economy and inflation will be top of mind for voters in the upcoming elections.

CBS News reports that many voters feel things are “out of control” and it could lead to republicans winning in key states: 

Republicans today remain in good position to win a majority of seats in the House. However, voters' current intentions suggest anything from a sizable GOP majority to a bare Democratic one possible. Our latest model indicates a range of possibilities, which you can explore using the interactive tool below. 

In our baseline model, Republicans lead in 228 seats. It represents a slight shift their way from a few weeks ago, with the party recapturing some of the leads that slipped from them in the summer. 

That would constitute a 15-seat gain — lower than average for a party challenging a first-term president in recent history. At that level, the majority line is just on the lower edge of the margin of error for our model.

Republicans are gaining the support of voters ahead of midterms. USA today has more:  

Republicans are resurgent as the midterm campaign heads into its final stretch, an exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll finds, amid angst about President Joe Biden's leadership and the nation's economy. 

As Americans feel the bite of inflation in their daily lives, from eating out less often to canceling vacations, voters overwhelmingly view the election as a way to send a message to the White House – and by double digits, that message is to change course.  

On a generic ballot, one naming parties but not individual candidates, those surveyed now support the Republican congressional candidate over the Democratic one by 49%-45%, a turnaround since the USA TODAY poll taken in July, when Democrats led 44%-40%. The findings stoke GOP hopes of gaining control of the House of Representatives in the Nov. 8 elections, and with that, new powers to confront the Democratic White House.

In the latest NY Supreme Court ruling, New York City has been ordered to bring back workers that were fired due to refusal to get the Covid vaccine. Bloomberg reports:  

New York City was ordered to reinstate a group of sanitation workers fired for refusing to get a Covid-19 vaccine after a state court judge ruled the mandate was unlawful. 

In an order dated Monday, a judge in Staten Island said the city health commissioner has the authority to issue public health mandates but cannot create a new condition of employment for municipal employees, cannot prohibit them from reporting to work and cannot terminate employees. 

“Being vaccinated does not prevent an individual from contracting or transmitting Covid-19,” Justice Ralph J. Forzio wrote. “As of the day of this decision, CDC guidelines regarding quarantine and isolation are the same for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. The petitioners should not have been terminated for choosing not to protect themselves. We have learned through the course of the pandemic that the vaccine against Covid-19 is not absolute.”

The 101st airborne division has been deployed near Ukraine. CBS News has more:  

The U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division has been deployed to Europe for the first time in almost 80 years amid soaring tension between Russia and the American-led NATO military alliance. The light infantry unit, nicknamed the "Screaming Eagles," is trained to deploy on any battlefield in the world within hours, ready to fight. 

CBS News joined the division's Deputy Commander, Brigadier General John Lubas, and Colonel Edwin Matthaidess, Commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, on a Black Hawk helicopter for the hour-long ride to the very edge of NATO territory — only around three miles from Romania's border with Ukraine. 

From the moment Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, his forces have advanced northward from the Crimean Peninsula, a Ukrainian region that Moscow illegally seized control of in 2014. For more than seven months, Russian troops have tried to push along the Black Sea coast into the Kherson region, aiming to capture the key Ukrainian port cities of Mykolaiv and Odesa.

A recent study by the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that test scores across the country have dropped after the Covid-19 pandemic. NBC News has the story:  

The Covid-19 pandemic spared no state or region as it caused historic learning setbacks for America’s children, erasing decades of academic progress and widening racial disparities, according to results of a national test that provide the sharpest look yet at the scale of the crisis. 

Across the country, math scores saw their largest decreases ever. Reading scores dropped to 1992 levels. Nearly four in 10 eighth graders failed to grasp basic math concepts. Not a single state saw a notable improvement in their average test scores, with some simply treading water at best. 

Those are the findings from the National Assessment of Educational Progress — known as the “nation’s report card” — which tested hundreds of thousands of fourth and eighth graders across the country this year. It was the first time the test had been given since 2019, and it’s seen as the first nationally representative study of the pandemic’s impact on learning.
