This morning students and teachers at St. Kevin’s High School in the Goulds held a mock disaster to showcase the dangers of Distracted Driving. The Students Against Distracted Driving (SADD) chapter hosted the event at the school parking lot at 9:30 am. Craig Halliday is the teacher coordinator and Jared Rees is a student playing a role in the scenario.

Yesterday morning on the show we spoke with a dog trainer who expressed his concerns about the large number of dog owners who disobey the law and let their dogs off leash in parks and walking trails. Ken Reid feels that all dogs, no matter the size, the breed or the temperament, should be on a leash at all times when in public. Councillor Jamie Korab is on the city of St. John’s animal care and control committee.

Many companies in the province are eager to find a sweet spot in the market when recreational marijuana becomes legal this summer. Gaze Seeds has been around for nearly a century but is poised to expand its reach as a supplier of marijuana seeds and equipment to grow pot.

The 2018 NDP Leadership Convention wrapped up in St. John’s yesterday. St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers came out on top as the new leader. Both Rogers and MUN economist Alison Coffin were gunning for the top role. Rogers won with 67 per cent of the vote and will now assume the role of NDP leader leading into the 2019 general election.

We continue our ongoing coverage of drugs inside our correctional institutions. Many inmates in prisons across Canada have substance abuse issues but most of them are getting less-than-adequate medical care. Advocates have been working to get inmates the same health care inside prison walls as they would on the outside.

A video showing a larger dog attacking a smaller dog has been making the rounds all weekend and garnering quite a reaction. The video was posted to the Residents of Southlands Subdivision Facebook page. It shows a larger type dog repeatedly biting a smaller dog that was on a leash. Residents tried to get the larger dog to release its grip by making noises and banging a snow shovel on the pavement. Eventually an SUV pulls up and honks its horn until the larger dog moves away. Indications are that the larger dog escaped from a fenced yard. RNC have laid charges under the Animal Control Act
