This evening White Rooster Theatre is hosting a 40th Anniversary Party for Planned Parenthood. When Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador opened its doors 40 years ago it offered weekly birth control clinics and made referrals for therapeutic abortions. Pro lifers fought to have its funding revoked calling it an evil entity and labelling its sex education videos as pornographic. Much has changed in the past four decades but Planned Parenthood still offers badly needed sexual health services.

Many inmates in prisons across Canada are addicted to drugs and most of them are getting less than adequate medical care. There is a move across the country to ensure inmates get the same health care inside prison walls as they would on the outside. In Alberta and Nova Scotia the treatment of inmates now falls under the health department as opposed to prison administrators.

A recent ruling from a judge in California has many coffee lovers shuddering at the thought of having to change their habits. The judge ruled that Starbucks and 90 other companies must warn customers of a potentially cancer-causing chemical found in coffee. That ruling and the media buzz surrounding it has renewed the age old debate: Is coffee good or bad for you

Sequence Bio has launched an on line campaign to draw attention to delays in the approval process for the Newfoundland and Labrador Genome Pilot Project research application. #ItsAboutTimeNL is seeking public support for its project, more clinical trials and fair, efficient and transparent health research regulations. The biotechnology company has appealed recent delays and decisions of the Health Research Ethics Board.

The entire town of Channel-Port aux Basques from the council to the school board to the local hotel has come together to help children with autism. Their efforts have certainly paid off. ”Today's Parent Magazine” has just designated the town as the most Autism-friendly town in Canada .
