@paperplanexmusic's Imagine If returns for episode five, featuring special guest @maria-hanlon
Maria has been part of Voices Radio almost from the very beginning. Day one, as it turned out, though she had no idea when she got on the train from Bournemouth for her trial show. One day to prep. A station she'd never heard of. A group of strangers drinking beers outside the studio who cheered massively when she faded up her first ever link. Since then: Secret Garden Party. Snowbombing. We Out Here. Jazz Cafe. The rise has been fast. The through-line has always been the same.
They talk about what that fast rise actually felt like from the inside, the version that doesn't make the bio. About the freelance mind that's always living one month ahead of itself, and how that gets in the way of taking stock. About what Louie Vega said at a talk the week before they recorded, and why it stuck with her. And about a pattern running through her work, one she hadn't quite seen until they talked about it.
That conversation comes about 45 mins in. Before then, Paperplane showcases some of his favourite recent digs: West Coast and UK deep underground flavours, chunky drums and dubby grooves. And after, Maria's guest mix flows like a late-night session steeped in soulful warmth and rhythmic goodness.
This is Imagine If. Let's go.
