In the spring of 2018, a rented van barrelled down a busy street in Toronto, mowing down pedestrians. Ten people died in that attack, and eight of those killed were women. The man accused in that attack, Alek Minassian, faces 10 counts of murder and 16 counts of attempted murder. He hasn’t entered a plea yet or been found guilty in a court of law.
Late last night, videotaped footage of the police interrogation that took place just hours after the attack was released. In the video, Minassian references his connection to the incel community and calls his alleged attack a “day of retribution.”
Host Tamara Khandaker walks through the tape with Global’s investigative journalist Andrew Russell. She also talks to Stephanie Carvin, a national security expert and a professor at Carleton University, about what people in the national security space are making of this video — and what we can take away from it.
