In This Week’s Show, episode 165, Aaron says some cleverly-worded shit about this week’s topics

Now, grab a beer and help us test the god hypothesis — because, while Strenia hasn’t struck us down yet, we are trying her patience!

    Shea’s Life Lesson

This week i learned that during an earthquake, coffins become huge underground maracas.

    Jenn’s Actual Lesson (by Steve)

In ancient Roman religion, Strenia was a goddess of the new year, purification, and wellbeing. On January 1, twigs from Strenia's grove were carried in a procession to the citadel, in a rite first noted as occurring on New Year's Day in 153 BC. She is connected with the custom of exchanging presents (strenae) and good wishes on the first of January.

But before we get to all that, let’s have a beer!

    * My day job is a telephone engineer.
    * Because I design and help oversee construction of buried phone lines, running into water lines is an issue. Water lines are notoriously hard (and/or expensive) to locate by other means (the best way is with precise maps); however, almost universally, our sub-contractors and even the water companies themselves use “divining” (aka water witching) to locate lines. So, of course, we hit them a lot. However, when I’ve brought up that divining doesn’t work, they look at me like I’ve grown a second head. It’s all confirmation bias: they remember when it worked, and make excuses for, or forget, the numerous failures. I once had a contractor try to convince me by walking up to a newly installed water meter and pipe system and show me how the rods “found” them; of course they found them because the upturned soil from the installation was obvious. Meanwhile, we were standing 80 feet from a huge lake.

    * Current Egyptian law says atheists can be prosecuted for expressing their disbelief in public but the committee’s proposal would go further and criminalize disbelief itself.

in the UK, where nearly a dozen companies have admitted to using divining (or dowsing) rods to detect leaks or figure out where to dig for water.

While there are variations on how these rods work, the version we’re talking about here involves holding two sticks out in front of you, parallel to each other. You walk around the area, and if the rods “detect” water, they’ll pull themselves toward each other and cross. If that sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is.

Overall, Le Page says, 10 of the 12 companies she contacted use or allow divination as a way to detect… something. Even though there is literally zero evidence that they work. It’s a waste of time, money, and resources.

In a statement to the Guardian, the company added: “Using dowsing rods to find leaks is an old-fashioned method. We don’t spend money on it, or issue rods to our engineers.”

Severn Trent told the Mirror: “We don’t issue divining rods to our engineers but we believe some of our engineers use them. As long as the leak is found and repaired quickly, by whatever means, we’re happy and so are our customers.”

The industry’s trade body, Water UK, also blamed individual engineers. It said: “The reality is that water companies are spending millions of pounds each year on innovative leakage detection schemes such as thermal imaging drones, sonic listening devices and other high-tech electronic mapping equipment, which has helped reduce leakages by a third since the 1990s, and it’s unlikely that a few individuals doing some unofficial divining has had much impact.

This week I have a question… What are the proper seasons greeting for a car salesman? Will I offend anyone if I wish them a Happy Honda Days, or should I go with a Merry Toyotathon? I guess I could just say Happy winter car sale season...

    Jenn’s Actual Lesson

In Roman mythology, Pilumnus ("staker") was a nature deity. He ensured children grew properly and stayed healthy. Ancient Romans made an extra bed after the birth of a child in order to ensure the help of Pilumnus. He also taught humanity how to grind grain.

A ceremony to honor the deity involved driving a stake into the ground.

But before we get to all that, let’s have a beer!

    1554 - New Belgium

“Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager beer uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.”

“My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the state,” he said in a text message.

“The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law. The point we were highlighting and that still stands, however, is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married.

    * written carefully in calligraphy and dating back to 1777, had been stuffed up the Messiah’s backside by a priest, preserving it like a time capsule.
    * It contains key information about the period and details on popular pastimes, the economic situation, political and religious matters, famous people and other topics. As well as naming the statue’s sculptor and including data on local information ranging from agricultural matters to community affairs, the document highlighted common diseases, popular children’s games and even the names of popular bullfighters of the time.

    * signed by Joaquin Minguez, priest of the cathedral of Burgo de Osma at the time

    * The document, carefully handwritten on both sides of two pages, was found when restorers removed a piece of fabric used to cover Christ’s behind, which exposed a small gap.
    * Local historian Efren Arroyo was overwhelmed by the discovery: “It is amazing because it really is unique to find hidden handwritten documents inside such statues.”

    * Meet Dana Nessel, a Democratic candidate for Michigan Attorney General. She’s a Detroit attorney who became Michigan-famous for leading the legal fight for marriage equality in the Great Lakes State. And as her pretty-damn-good online ad suggests, she has a good idea for reducing the amount of sexual harassment by icky men in high office: Get more women in office.
    * We’re just gonna let her speak for herself.

    * Video: start to 0:50 the again at 1:02- 1:50

    HL1 - The Mad Rocket Mant - http://bit.ly/2ide4cT

    * Self-taught rocket scientist "Mad" Mike Hughes has built himself a steam powered rocket that he plans to ride up into the … firmament?
    * Hughes is a 61-year-old limo driver who’s spent the last few years building a steam-powered rocket out of salvaged parts in his garage. His project has cost him $20,000
    * His first test of the rocket will also be the launch date when he straps into his homemade contraption and attempts to hurdle over the ghost town of Amboy, California.
    * That launch date was supposed to be the very day we’re recording here at wrathful studios, but now he’s delayed it due to gov-ment interference
    * Hughes is confident this will mark the first step toward proving the Earth is flat, after all.
    * "I don’t believe in science," said Hughes, whose main sponsor for the rocket is Research Flat Earth. "I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction."
    * In 2014, Hughes constructed and launched a rocket. He jumped on a private property in Winkelman, Arizona, and traveled 1,374 feet, about a quarter-mile, before he pulled his parachutes. He said two of the parachutes were at least 20 years old at the time and one didn't open.
    * He collapsed after that landing — the G-forces taking a toll — and needed three days to recover.

    Jim’s Good Gay News

Australia got almost 80% of their citizens to the Post Office to vote, and 62% said let the gays marry. So the Aussies are having a g’day mate. Who’s surprised? Then you haven’t been paying attention.

A Goodman is Hard to Find - http://bit.ly/2A1airj

Ohio lawmaker Wes Goodman snicker routinely touted his Christian faith and anti-LGBT views has resigned after being caught having sex with a man in his office.

    Yep, it’s happened again.

Goodman is married to the woman who is the assistant director of the annual anti-abortion March For Life.

The layers of this delicious irony cake are many and varied:

The 33-year-old had been branded the “conscience of the conservative movement”.

His Twitter biography describes him as “Christian. American. Conservative. Republican. Husband to @Beth1027”, has regularly claimed, "natural marriage" occurs between a man and a woman.

"Healthy, vibrant, thriving, values-driven families are the source of Ohio's proud history and the key to Ohio's future greatness,” reads his campaign website which has now been taken offline.

On the flip-side: He exchanged salacious texts and emails with gay men he met on Capitol Hill, and sent sexually suggestive messages to young men he met through conservative circles ...
