Australian elections are of course always tight affairs, but if the coalition has any hope of salvaging a win later this year they are going to have to defeat not only Labor & The Greens, but also a growing number of independents that are pounding at the gates.

Just how independent these characters remains a valid question, but they are in play in 2019 because a section of the Liberal voting heartland is on the move.

Michael is joined by The Australian Newpaper’s Editor at Large Paul Kelly who in a thought-provoking article this week, wrote about this cohort describing them as a section of the middle class with moralistic about climate change… compassionate in its politics… we off in income… but alienated from the Liberal Party it once supported.

Yesterday, the new Victorian Member of Legislative Assembly Clifford Hayes gave his maiden speech to the Victorian Parliament to call out what is the big issue at the core of so many of the challenges that Australia faces today…unsustainable population growth.

In particular, Hayes highlighted of the hypocrisy of the Australian Greens and what seems to be very double standard when it comes to the population question.  On the one hand they claim to be the vanguards of the environmental movement… but on the other they are also the vanguards of the open borders big Australia community.

Michael is joined by Mr Hayes, who advocates reducing Australia’s annual immigration intake by more than 50 per cent.

Pope Francis landed in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday for the first-ever visit by a pontiff to the Arabian Peninsula - the birthplace of Islam where Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the grand imam of al-Azhar in Egypt, has urged Middle East’s Muslims to ‘embrace’ local Christians at an interfaith meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Michael is joined by Anglican Pastor Dr Mark Durie to discuss this momentous occasion as well as Christians in the Middle East facing unprecedented levels of persecution.

South Australian Senator Rex Patrick has thrown down the gauntlet to Australia’s $2 billion cotton industry calling for a ban on cotton exports. 

He says we export 90% of the cotton we grow & because it uses about 20% of the basin’s water… it’s akin to exporting 20% of the Murray Darling to China and India.

Suffice to say the Cotton industry doesn’t agree calling the proposal a reckless attack on rural communities, but Senator Patrick plans to press on and will introduce legislation to the parliament next week.

Yesterday Scott Morrison confirmed that all asylum seeker children have been removed from Nauru or are about to leave the island… reminding Australians that there were 109 asylum seeker children on Nauru as early as August last year.

Operation Sovereign Border arguably played the key roll allowing this to eventuate and the man who engineered that feat was former Major General, now Senator, Jim Molan who joins Michael to discuss this huge milestone that comes just at the right time for the government in this election year.
