By Annie TalksPhilippians 4:11 NASBNot that I speak from need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstance I am. The Apostle Paul wrote from prison mostly because he was sought after by the Jewish leaders who learned of his recent conversion and that he was spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ - which Jewish leaders considered false teaching. Paul was the first to spread the gospel to the Gentiles that they are saved by their faith in Christ and not by good deeds or works of the law. This infuriated the Jewish leaders. Before Paul's conversion, he was known as Saul of Tarsus - a Pharisee and Roman citizen who persecuted Christians. Saul had a Jesus encounter where Jesus appeared to him asking why he was persecuting the Christians. Saul lost his sight and spent three days in prayer. Ananias of Damascus laid hands on him and restored his sight. This radical encounter changed Saul's life forever. He would later be named Paul and he became a messenger of the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul's life and ministry are considered to have shaped the course of Christianity. Paul's letters, most of them written in prison, became pivotal in the New Testament. In his circumstance, Paul writes in Philippians 4:11, he has learned to be content. Some things are just out of your control. He was humbled to accept the circumstance in which he found himself - and he was conveying that contentment. What circumstance do you find yourself in where you simply have no control over? Perhaps it is a work situation, a work environment, a family situation, or financial or health issues? I have learned that I am exactly where God wants me to be in this moment. I am grateful for everything I have: a roof over my head and a job that pays the bills. I have groceries and food. I'm grateful for God's provisions. I am content because this is what God wants for me. Who am I to complain about what God wants for me? Who am I to complain about the things I do not have? I have to trust and believe that God knows best what I need.I may want certain things because that is my flesh talking. Remember, it was the serpent (Satan) that tempted Eve by showing her the things she did not have - but yet God gave Adam and Eve all that they needed, all the provisions. We should be content with all that God has given us. I find that social media today has that way of showing you the same -- it shows you the things you do not have, the person you are not, the haves you should have, and the wants you should want. But I implore you to see your reflection in God's mirror. You are made in God's image and that is saying a lot. You have all the love, peace, and joy God has for you -- and you have salvation and eternal life because of Jesus Christ who paid for your life with His own. Are you content? I am. By Annie TalksPsalm 86:15 NIVYou, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.When I think about my past, I think about the person I was before giving my life to Jesus. I remember being a rebellious teen, and before that a snarky adolescent. I remember being in a room with my mom and my uncle (my mom's brother). I just remember my uncle reprimanding me for giving my mom a hard time - such a hard time that I made my mom cry. I do not remember what it was even about, but in retrospect, realizing that I made my cry over something that cause her heartache, just breaks my heart. I apologized and asked my mom for forgiveness - but that incident has always stuck with me.When I came to Jesus, I knew He forgave me and wiped my slate clean. My lifelong desire is to live as Jesus did. He showed great compassion for those he encountered. He knelt down to their level, He met them where they were. When He went with Jairus to tend to Jairus' sick daughter at home, Jesus was met by the woman with the blood-flow issue. He stopped and knelt down to heal her because she had faith with just a touch of His garment she would be healed. He felt her faith, and it was important for Jesus to tell her that. He demonstrated great compassion for her. He showed compassion for so many people who were ill, paralyzed, blind, poor, hungry, grieving, and demon-possessed. His heart broke for each one of them. Today, I am reminded how I can show even just an ounce of compassion the way that Jesus did by praying with, over and for someone; helping others in need; serving where God leads me; feeding the hungry; showing kindness to others, even if they are difficult and mean-spirited, refraining from gossip; and going above and beyond what is expected. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can go a long way.What is important to me is before I react to a situation, I often find myself asking: What would Jesus do? Remember those trendy WWJD bracelets people used to wear? I often think about what someone said once that stuck with me: Are my actions grieving the Holy Spirit? The means: disobeying God or behaving in a way that goes against my spiritual growth and maturity. So, I continually pray and ask for the Holy Spirit's guidance to live and serve the way that Jesus modeled - and that is what is pleasing to God. Love, others, show compassion and kindness, and may your thoughts, words, and actions pour into others the way God would want. By Annie TalksHebrews 4:16 NIVLet us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.When I think of someone who is approachable, I think of my current work situation and I am grateful to have two managers who have OPEN DOOR POLICIES. Meaning they are always willing to meet with you, always willing to drop everything to hear you or to discuss anything.I had a college professor that did the same. Not only did she take time to teach and instruct her class in an intimate setting, but she encouraged engagement. We had our desks assembled in a roundtable fashion so that teaching was set up like a board meeting. Everyone could see one another, she could see us, we could see her. Then after the lesson she encouraged everyone to ask a question. We had a class of no more than 20 students so when I say she encouraged everyone to as a questions, I mean literally EVERYONE in the class had to ask a question. We had to actively listen to the questions that the student before had asked so as not to ask the same questions. That method of teaching set us up for success. To this day in meetings, I make it a point to ask a questions, usually for clarity or for other reasons like making sure I understand the assignment or knowing my responsibilities. We should approach God's throne in the same manner - approach it with confidence knowing that we will learn something valuable and important from God about how to live out our days, understand our assignments, our responsibilities, and know what tools and resources God wants us to use. This is the time to pray and ask God for clarity, bring our petitions to Him, intercede on behalf of others who need to be lifted up, ask for strength, endurance, forgiveness, etc., knowing God will not turn away from us. He will not shut his "office door" on us because He welcomes us, He welcomes our individual and intimate time with Him. We can always count on the following things when we approach God's throne: We know He's always listening; He's welcoming us with open arms; we receive His free gift of grace even when we don't deserve it; God will always answer us (maybe not at that very moment), but He will answer us. It's like your boss hearing your questions and concerns and responding with: "Let me find out and I will get back to you."It is having the confidence that God hears you, knows the things you are going to say and ask even before you say them; and knowing He genuinely cares and is concerned about you -- because He loves you. By Annie TalksJohn 15-2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. This Bible verse reminds of the times I would see the gardeners that came to my work every Monday to trim the bushes and pull out the weeds. Once in a while, weirdly during the summer, the tree trimmers would come out and prune the branches, cut some of the branches off leaving the trees to look barren, without leaves and branches. I used to think, "Why now? We need the shade during these hot summer months more than ever." But what do I know? I'm not a tree trimmer or tree professional! This is the time, best suited for tree trimming, apparently. This is the time trees experience intense heat - and may grow out of control or in the wrong directions. Ultimately through the "stress" of the summer heat, the trees could bear bad fruit or their leaves could be diseased. Pruning is a necessary things. God also prunes away bad things that should not be in our lives during different seasons of our lives. When we go through "heated" situations, get exposed to bad elements, or bad people in our lives - this could cause us to grow in the wrong directions. We could go astray or bear bad fruit. He ultimately begins pruning away those harmful influences, or harmful and toxic people so that we could have the chance at growing in the direction God intends for us and that would bear good fruit. The trees after they been pruned, appears to be stripped of their leaves and stripped of their branches. They looks bare, but they are ready for what is to come: the next seasons of their lives -- fall and winter, and then by spring they should harvest good fruit, good leaves, and have productive growth. God works on our hearts the same way. Like the trees that trusts their gardener, so should we trust our God -- the master gardener. He knows best about our lives and will never leave us or forsake us. Colossians 3:23-24Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Since high school, I have worked several jobs earning income, paying bills, maybe spending more than I should - sometimes living beyond my means. I have worked jobs with varying hours - mostly Monday through Friday, with weekends off. I have worked other jobs with retail hours, some weekend hours, and overtime hours. Some of us go to school, whether a vocation school, a four-university or a certificate program in a specific field - around things we are passionate about. Sometimes work can be stressful, unbearable at times, and tiring. Sometimes the people we work with or the environment we work in can be stressful, toxic or hostile. Whatever the scenario, if we have the same approach as a posture of worship - we may have a better attitude.In Colossians 3:23, the Apostle Paul wrote, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." When you feel things are getting to a boiling point at work - excuse yourself, maybe step outside, take a break, have something to eat, hydrate yourself -- and just PRAY! Pray that God walk with you through this! He's already there with you, He has gone before you. He already knew what was ahead of you before you even got there. Do not listen to the lies of the enemy telling you that you are worthless, useless, or incompetent. Ask God to change your attitude and to help you see through His lens. Remember: it is not man we are pleasing - but God! Work as though you are working for God. I have to sometimes take a step back, take a deep breath, and I envision God is with me there at work at that time and in that situation. Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, your words, and your actions. It is the power of God that will sustain you and get you through it. It had lyrics like: "Happiness is finding a pencil, pizza with sausage, telling the time." Isn't that just adorable? Then there were other lyrics that were a little more profound: "Happiness is being alone every now and then. Happiness is coming home again. Happiness is morning and evening. Daytime and night time too. For happiness is anyone and anything at all that's loved by you." Simply wow!I think of God when I hear those lyrics. For God gives us morning and evening, daytime and night time, too. But truly happiness is anyone and anything loved by you, God!Who knew a childhood song would have such deep and profound meaning? In this verse, Ecclesiastes 9:7, the Hebrew word is RAT-SAH which implies acceptance or favor. This verse suggests that God has blessed the works of those who live righteously, and that their actions are pleasing to God. And in this verse, the author writes: "Go!" We're not told to just "eat our food with joy," but "Go!" Seize the day. Carpe Diem! According to crossway.com, God takes pleasure in your pleasure. He's given it to you, "The sunrises, the sunsets, small dogs and puppy tails wagging, the coo of a newborn baby, etc.). Enjoy the blessings God gives you and share it! One of my kids said all he wanted for Christmas was: Peace and and happiness.Whether you're giving gifts during Christmas, a birthday or a special occasion, there's nothing more satisfying than to see the receiver open the fit and express joy when they've unwrap their gift. Jesus said to his disciples to ask anything in His name, that their joy may be full -- the very fact that Jesus intercedes on our behalf should give us joy! The very fact that we can go to our Heavenly Father, the creator of the universe, the God of all things, all creatures, great and small -- should bring us joy. That's what God wants. When a child comes to their father, their mother, their parents, like when my grandbabies come to me with outstretched arms, it bring me great joy. Why? Because knowing they trust me, love me, find comfort in me, feel secure with me -- brings me great joy. That's what God wants -- for each of us to come to Him knowing we can find comfort in Him, security in Him, peace and joy in Him. When we receive Jesus into our lives we can find joy in Him. This likely happened after David took the throne - and with all the pressure of becoming king, David just wanted to go back to simpler days when he would be carefree and sought God's presence in the wilderness.
