Ever heard the old joke about the guy who says to his doctor, “Hey Doc, every time I do this, it hurts,”? And what does the doctor say? “Stop doing that.” That’s the story in Judges 15 & 16; “Hey Samson, stop doing that.”
And it’s true for us, too. Sometimes, it’s just too simple: “Sin Makes You Stupid.” But even as silly as Samson is, he nonetheless becomes another biblical figure to point us to Jesus. Our Redeemer laid down His life for us, that through His death, we might have eternal life.

As a child, and maybe even now, I have some reservations about darkness. As a young man, I did think there were monsters under the bed, and I was sure there was something in my grandparent's musty basement ready to eat me. As I write this, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, thinking about it. I know we grow out of those things, or at least we hope so. However, as a Christian, I am convinced that there is a kingdom of light and a kingdom of darkness, and I am in the throws of a battle I cannot see. But I will still take a courageous stand for Jesus! Oh, and yes, I think there are monsters hiding in the shadows of the kingdom of darkness. Yet, I know in whom I have believed! I serve at the pleasure and am protected by the King of Light! As Paul says, "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." (Colossians 1:13–14) And again, "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (2 Corinthians 4:6). The kingdom of darkness wants to rule, but will never overcome the King of light! John writes, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:1–5) So have courage in the dark; the light has, is, and will always win for those who call upon Jesus!

We’ve all heard that old saying, “What goes around comes around.” Or perhaps you’ve noticed just how ugly your sin is... on someone else. Isn’t it amusing when someone gets a little taste of their own medicine, and becomes indignant that anyone would have the audacity to mistreat them in such a manner? In our text for this teaching, Jacob gets a huge dose of his own medicine, and he doesn’t like it. But in the end, God shows Himself faithful and true to His promises. What promises has God given to you from His Word? He is and will ever be faithful to His Word.

Where do things unusually go south in the heist movie? Usually, when it is time to share the take, someone gets greedy, someone gets shot, and everyone gets caught. Have you been in a situation where you thought you received the raw end of a deal too? You know, things did not seem fair for some reason, promises were not kept, or expectations were not made clear, and now things are a mess. Yep, you and me both. This is why most amateur bands break up over who gets paid what. Someone always thinks they are not getting their fair share. I often wonder if the deception in this life is intentional or if others were actually functioning at an incredibly high level of ineptitude. Levels I myself did not know where possible for the living. However, I think most of us have had that happen from time to time. Why, most often because other people are looking out for themselves. The rich young ruler was a great example. (see Luke 18:18-27) But, in the kingdom of God, we are to be living for and seeking to bless others as we fully follow Jesus. We are to be living life as willing sacrifices in and through obedience to the King of kings, knowing that He has more than enough reward for us in this life and the life to come. So much so that we will be overwhelmed by His divine love and goodness. Jesus says, "Follow me!" Will you come?

Have you ever had someone do something to you that hurt you deeply in some way? We all have, right? But, did their actions or inactions that hurt you so bad look or feel oddly familiar? I was upset about a ministry situation years ago that I was confiding in an older brother in the Lord, it was more like complaining, to be honest, and he said to me, "Well, that is what you do!" I was devastated! Not because of what he said, but as I thought about it, he was right. He went on to say, "Our sin often looks way worse on other people, but it is still our sin. Wow. There is an inescapable truth that each one of us will reap what we sow, and without exceptions, we will be taken aback when our chickens come home to roost. No matter how hard we try to accept it, we protest every time it happens to us, even when the circumstances are out doing in the first place. But in the end if we take our eyes off of our mistakes, circumstances, hurts, and betrayals, take a breath, and look up and see something better. We can simply praise the LORD.
