Luke 18:18-27. Fact: Anyone can be saved. However, a disheartening reality is many will not enter into the gracious gift of eternal life because of pride and/or because they have a love and loyalty to the things of this world over Jesus, our redeemer, and will perish with it. The youngest of the apostles writes this towards the end of his life, "Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world. The world is passing away and also its lusts, but the one who does the will of God continues to live forever." (1 John 2:15–17) Jesus makes the point that we cannot serve both God and wealth when He says, "No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." (Luke 16:13) Although this verse is clear many today have been blinded by riches and have lost their way. Now there is nothing inertially wrong with possession or building wealth. For it is not the money that is the problem. Riches are amoral by themselves. Neither good nor bad. It is how we react to, think about, or use them that is the problem. Paul writes to Timothy and says, "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:10) To quote the great theologians, "The Beetles," "Money can't buy me love." Money also cannot earn a place in heaven, and the love of it can keep us from Jesus. That price has been paid in the blood of Christ through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now, all we need to do is, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16:31)
