In a world full of pain, suffering, violence, and injustice, we often struggle to find peace and meaning. Our land has been defiled by the blood of innocent lives taken before their time repeatedly. We live in a media-driven culture that is more concerned with popularity, success, and ratings than real love and absolute truth. Yes, there is absolute truth. (See John 17:17-23) As we look at the dumpster fire that is our current condition as a culture, we can start to wonder where God is in all this? Rest assured that God is still on His throne, and He knows the affairs of men and the wildness of their depraved hearts, and He is coming again. Remember, He sent his Son to die on the cross for each of them. (See John 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 5:21) Yet, even though the way of salvation has been made (John 14:6), many would rather die a horrid death for all time than submit to a loving God. (That I have never fully understood.) So what do we do as we see great suffering in this world at the hands of evildoers? Do everything we can to alleviate suffering when and where we can (James 1:27) and weep with those who mourn and make the love of Jesus known in practical ways. (See Romans 12:15b) And remember as we wonder how long until the Lord comes and makes all things right, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9)

Having people in your life who are not thankful can be exhausting. Of this truth, we can be sure. It is infuriating when a parent, spouse, or child acts as if kindness is owed to them for all they have done or not done. What would you do if you paid off someone's debt and they never said thank you? What if you did something unique for your kids and received nothing but attitude? But, can you imagine the heartbreak God has experienced having sacrificially and freely given His only Son for the salvation of the world where most never care to show any gratitude for the sacrifice? Here is what troubles me. It seems the Church, the body of believers worldwide, has completely forgotten to be thankful for the reality of the cross as they go about the busyness of "religious" work. We seem to have replaced our relationship with religion. The practice of empty faith was never and is not God's intention or best design for us as His people. We are to be openly thankful for all of His goodness towards us in Christ Jesus. The Psalmist writes, "Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's." (Ps 103:1–5) So take a moment and thank God for all He has done for you. We should also take the time to thank others for the things they do that bless us. Even if it seems like a small thing to do, it is a big deal in our culture today to say, "Thank you." A grateful heart is a happy heart. So thank you in advance for taking the few seconds needed to be thankful to God and those He has put in your life.

So here is the deal, gang; God does not work for us. The opposite is our actual reality. Jesus said, "If you love Me, (you) keep My commandments." (John 14:15). He did not say, "If you love me, I will keep my commandment for you because you love me." Before I lose you, know this: many behave as if God owes them something. I am not saying this is their orthodoxy (belief, what we cannot see). Still, it is their orthopraxy (action, what we can see), and often our actions follow what we believe. Of course, the fact that God has done everything for our salvation for us to have a salvific (saving) relationship with Him through the sacrifice of the Cross is a fantastic reality. One that should overwhelm us regularly when given honest consideration. So in light of His loving, gracious, and merciful gift of salvation, are we to sit around and do nothing or step up and serve our King as an active participant in His glorious kingdom. So the next time you see or have a need, maybe you are the one who God has created to fulfill that need. Remember, the Bible says, "The just shall live by faith." (Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38) It does not say, "The just shall sit around and do nothing in faith." Get up! Get going! Get stuff done.

Genesis 19-20. Pastor Tim here! One of my dad’s favorite sayings was “The grass ain’t always greener on the other side of the fence.” “What’s that mean?” I asked. “That means don’t think you’ll be better someplace else.” I came to realize the grass ain’t always greener on the other side includes being in a different relationship, going a different school, or working a different job. Although regrettably I always didn’t heed the advice, I never forgot it. The expression is also the used in songs. One was the 1986 hit by Earl Thomas Conley, “I Can’t Win for Losing You.” It’s a love song about a man who was finally free from a relationship. He wanted to be free and found that the grass wasn’t greener on the other side. Here’s part of the chorus: "And the grass ain't no greener, here on the other side.” Wednesday’s text is about a man who could have pen the words to the old Country song.

John 12:1-6 and Psalm 115:16-18. For most of us in the Western church context, we see a variety of worship styles, from the traditional to the contemporary and everything in between, as we seek to bring God glory. We are told by the Psalmist, "I will praise You, O LORD, among the peoples, and I will sing praises to You among the nations. (Psalm 108:3) Then again, "I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly, I will praise You." (Psalm 22:22) and "I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations." (Psalm 57:9) Finally, we read, "I will give You thanks in the great assembly; I will praise You among many people." (Psalm 23:18) What a wonderful picture of corporate worship. But, we need to remember that corporate worship is simply the gathering of dedicated individuals who have a deep love for God and will to express their love, devotion, and thankfulness for all He is together in song or service. When we worship as a gospel-centered relational community, the outcome becomes synergistic. When whole community worship is in one accord in our different and dynamic ways, the result of our ministry of worship to the King of kings is greater than the collective input and speaks powerfully to the lost who need Jesus. Do you and I make Jesus known through our sacrifice of praise? I hope so!

In James 2:23, Abraham is called the friend of God. As this chapter begins, it’s been nearly fifteen years since Abram and had a face-to-face with his friend, God. Perhaps that’s another reason why Abraham is also called the father of faith, (Romans 4). Even after all those years, Abram’s faith never faltered.
