At some point or another, we have all compared ourselves to someone else. They are often known as our childhood heroes. Someone we looked up to and wanted to be like. These were, for my generation, men and women of great character and purpose. Yet today, things are vastly different. Role moles have become those with the most followers. Millions are looking at the way they look, act, or talent they have and want to be like them. No matter the cost. Well, it is one thing to have a role model or mentor in your life in a healthy way, but it is a sickness of the soul to be like the wicked.The act of disparaging those around us in order to make ourselves look or feel more righteous than we really are is now a global pandemic. This behavior is sin, flat out. Jesus was not about to have it. Here in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus targets a message, at least a short parable, to those who trusted in their own righteousness. Those who compared themselves to and looked down on others in order to feel good about the life they were living. They thought, "Well, I am not as bad as this guy or gal, so I am good with God." Jesus did not think so and called them out for it. The most damaging part of this is looking at others as a standard or righteousness; they miss the actual standard of the Holy God of heaven and fall short of God's Glory. (Romans 3:23) Oops! In Isaiah 64:6, we read, "But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”

So here is a question. While we are waiting for the return of Jesus Christ, what do we do about all the violence, injustice, and corruption in the world around us? Bring it to the King! Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, has been given all authority to do righteousness and justice. (See Matthew 28:17ff) Therefore we should bring our requests, even our complaints, openly to the King in His court or goodness, mercy, and grace. Yet, it seems We have lost the will to pray. We believed a lie that prayer does not make a difference. This is without question the tactic of the devil. Remember, brother and sister, that he is the enemy of our faith and the church when we do not pray to lose our way. When we do not pray, we do not have power. We go to battle with no weapons. Remember, The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, or the flesh or of the earth, but are mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds. (See 2 Corinthians 10:4–5) Never forget we have a God who can do exceedingly, abundantly, above all we could ask or even think. (See Ephesians 3:20-21) With God, all things are possible. (Mark 10:27) Does this mean that we will get everything we ask for? Absolutely not! We need to praise God in ungranted requests. Why? Because, as it seems to me, there is no such thing as an unanswered prayer. A "no" from the heart of a loving father is still an answer. But that does not mean we stop asking, seeking or knocking. For when we pray, we discover not that God is getting in line with our plans and ideas, but on the contrary, our hearts become aligned with His heart and desire. So stop, take a beat, and let's have a prayer.

Of the seven feasts of Israel, the Feast of Pentecost is perhaps the most unusual of all. Rather than waving sheaves before the LORD, the priest waved two loaves of baked, leavened bread. Also, rather than Christ Himself fulfilling this Feast, it was the Church that fulfilled this Feast in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit descended and united Jews and Gentiles, two “sinful” loaves.

The blessing of Pentecost was a deliberate reversal of the curse of Babel. Rather than languages being confused and mankind scattered, at Pentecost, the language barrier was deliberately, supernaturally eradicated, and mankind was gathered as one in Christ by the Holy Spirit. Pentecost symbolizes a new unity in the Spirit surpassing every racial, ethnic, national, and linguistic barrier. Because of Pentecost, the one institution on earth where everyone is equal – on level ground all around at the foot of the cross – is the Church. So, Happy Birthday!

Genesis 23 brings us to the end of the major narrative for the Father of Faith, Abraham, and his journey of faith. We see the death and burial of Sarah his wife. The beautiful symbolism portrayed here helps us understand that there are certain ways to deal with different events in our lives as Christians. We have a different way of burying things than the world, and this brings us to the ultimate freedom found in Jesus Christ.
