It’s been said the devil figured out a long time ago that he couldn’t beat the Church, so he decided to join it. Could there possibly be a more effective way to beat it than to join it? This strategy is nothing new. From the very beginning of the Church, our enemy has worked feverishly at bringing us down from the inside out. It is an integral part of his strategy.

We’ve all heard those corny jokes that begin with the hypothetical question, “What do you get when you cross a this with a that?” In the text before us, the question might sound something like, “What do you get when you cross grace with beauty?” (For those are the meanings of the names Ananias and Sapphira). Unfortunately, the answer is neither rhetorical nor humorous. Ananias and Sapphire – grace and beauty – brought spiritual deception. However, their hypocrisy did not hinder the Church but rather, it purified the Church while hastening their own demise.

How about us? Do we work to appear more spiritual to others than we really are? Do we attempt to draw the adulation to ourselves that really and only belongs to God?

Luke 10:1-24. For the faithful follower of Jesus Christ, there is never a lack of opportunity to do great and wonderful things for the kingdom of God. Yet, many believers have been sitting on the sidelines for way too long. What are we waiting for? This is a great question. It feels as though something sinister has happened. Like darkness has fallen upon the world and those of us with the light have been too afraid to share it with the world that is vanishing into the darkness. Now we could keep blaming COVID and the cultural and political fallout that has ensued. These and other messes, many of which we are all still trying to clean up, are not the real problem. The reality is even more sinister. We have found ourselves isolated and alone. This has never been God's ideal. Even from the beginning, He said it was not good that man was alone. (Genesis 2:18) We are created for relationships and designed to be in community. This is also how we are to do the work of God. We are to work and serve in community, not in independent isolation. Often we find ourselves alone because of sin, pride, anger, bitterness, lack of forgiveness and this list could go on and on. This should never be the case. The reality is that a list of things that seem to divide us seem far easier to compile than the list of things that unite us. But the one thing that unites us trumps them all! Love. In this love, we go out into the world, not as lone-rangers, but as a community, arm in arm for the benefit of the lost to know the joy of the kingdom of God.

Luke 9:51-62. The call for each of us to follow Jesus is crystal clear in the scriptures, right? Of course, it is! Yet, so many come in and out of the church without ever really making the choice to run after the Lord with abandonment. Why is that? I wish I knew. If I had all the answers to this subject I would write a book on it. Still, for reasons beyond my understanding, I watch so many simply test the waters of faith. They come in, walk around, get to know some people, and maybe even place a toe or two in the waters to see how it feels without ever making the jump to really engage with Jesus and the community of faith. What are we afraid of? Everything! We think we know what this life should be like and well, a lifetime commitment of self-denial to follow Jesus just does not fit our western ideal. But what does it really do for us if we gain the whole world and in the end lose our souls? (Mark 8:36-38) Nothing, absolutely nothing. We are called to follow Jesus and be part of His kingdom with our full faith and fidelity to the King of kings and the LORD of lords. Leave the things of this world to the world and follow Jesus.
