Luke 9:51-62. The call for each of us to follow Jesus is crystal clear in the scriptures, right? Of course, it is! Yet, so many come in and out of the church without ever really making the choice to run after the Lord with abandonment. Why is that? I wish I knew. If I had all the answers to this subject I would write a book on it. Still, for reasons beyond my understanding, I watch so many simply test the waters of faith. They come in, walk around, get to know some people, and maybe even place a toe or two in the waters to see how it feels without ever making the jump to really engage with Jesus and the community of faith. What are we afraid of? Everything! We think we know what this life should be like and well, a lifetime commitment of self-denial to follow Jesus just does not fit our western ideal. But what does it really do for us if we gain the whole world and in the end lose our souls? (Mark 8:36-38) Nothing, absolutely nothing. We are called to follow Jesus and be part of His kingdom with our full faith and fidelity to the King of kings and the LORD of lords. Leave the things of this world to the world and follow Jesus.

Revelation 6:1-8. Everything, with the exception of God Himself, as a beginning. (Psalm 90:2; Hebrews 7:3; Genesis 14:17-20) Each of us and even creation itself, the known universe as we can understand it, has one. (Genesis 1:1) We as humans go through a lot of first's in our lifetime. Our first step, our first word, our first day of school, our first dance, our first kiss, our first broken heart, and the list can go on and on. Well, we know from the scriptures that there is coming another first day. The first day of the Great Tribulation. The first day of the seventieth week of Danial. (See Daniel 9) This first day will be when the first seal is broken by the Lamb of God who is worthy to take the scroll from Him who sits on the throne and loose its seals. Why? Because He gave Himself as the sacrifice for the redemption of all creation. (See Revelation 4 & 5.) Once the seal is broken there is no going back, no starting over. This is the moment that begins the last seven years of history as we know it. Nothing with ever be the same again. Those who abuse the earth and reject God will be judged. (Revelation 11:9) Those loyal to Him during this time will be redeemed, but at a great cost. His love has been made manifest in Jesus and much of the world has rejected him, and so now begins the coming of the judge to make things right and redeem creation from the grips of the dragon.

Christian counselor told me in order to be free from my pain and hurt, I have to go unpack the baggage of my past. She used Exodus 34:7 to show how God says to do this. Although over the decades of service many would have to say they have been deeply hurt by those closest to them and at times felt left alone and abandoned. Not only by people of the faith family and if they are honest at times the Lord too. There are seasons of confusion, hurt, despair and pressure from within and without. So what do men and women of God do? We all keep doing the work of the ministry even when it does not make sense. We keep looking and moving forward for the Glory of Jesus and His kingdom one obedient step at a time. No matter how tired, poured out, broken, or alone we feel, we are to keep putting one foot in front of the other until our race is run. Christian, keep your eyes on Jesus and run, walk, crawl, or even get carried if you have to, that you will be found to have journey well during your Christian adventure. Jesus is waiting at the finish line.

Luke 9:41-51. Why do so many disciples of Jesus and churches full of His followers fight over who is the greatest? The reasons are too many to address here, so maybe another time for a fuller conversation on this dilemma. Yet, the tragic reality is that we have been weakening our witness for generations with all the infighting. Those who seek position, power, and popularity have been negating the weightier matters of the Law (Love), and those who seek to be in the position of an exclusive corner on the market of God's truth and ministry saying they are the only way or the best way because they are the ones close to Jesus. These distractive attitudes breed an environment teaming with self-focus and pride. The light of hope and the lack of love, honor, and respect we should see within the Body of Christ has been replaced with the darkness of envy, division, and suspicion. What a tragedy! Shame on us all. As the preacher says in Ecclesiastes, "There is nothing new under the sun." Jesus confronted the apostles on these same issues as they began his journey with them toward Jerusalem. It breaks my heart that we seem to have, as the churches of God, not heard, and if we have, we have not heeded the clear instructions of Jesus to love one God and love one another!
